I think that is what got me into this addiction in the 1st place, if im right it is the bundled version of the game that you get when you buy a pc. i bought it second hand at a market, its only got half the missions of fs though

He's right. Interplay released tonnes of different versions of freespace and freespace 2.
In addition to those named there's also FS2 : colossus (which you can get with a wingman force 3D joystick) and an FS DVD (can`t remember if it's FS1 or FS2 though)

FS1 came on DVD with a Voodoo 3 GFX card. I think. It didn't have the box and instructions, so it just wouldn't do on its own for a collector.
EDIT: Oh, and no game is complete without a Quick Reference card!

Nope. You`ve muddied the waters instead.
As far as I`ve been able to gather Darkness Rising is BOTH the campaign you mention and also the name for the OEM version of freespace. Evidence pointing to this is the fact that there is a seperate patch for Darkness Rising available from Interplay and that in several places it states that the patches for FS1 will only work on the the full version and not Darkness Rising (Yet if darkness rising is only a campaign then you would have the full version)
Hell. Now I`ve even confused myself Anyway Darkness Rising was definately available on a Freespace CD so unless [V] bundled the campaign with later versions of FS1 it seems likely that there are two things that can claim that name.
Anyway here's the links. Figure it out for yourselves.

Descent network saying that the patches don`t work on FS : DR
Look at that. It's a Darkness Rising CD!

FS: Darkness Rising is an OEM product shipped with computers and other products as a promo tool to show off the abilities of a given product without actually giving you the whole game.
Darkness Rising has the first few Descent: FreeSpace missions. Less than a 1/3rd of the total campaign.
Darkness Rising is also the name of a fan made campaign. The two are not related.
