What is the point in the Hades class Destroyer? (And why is the Sobek so powerful??)
The Hades: It's USELESS!
Seriously, when I've pitted it against other ships in my missions, it always dies, and hardly fires at all. It has so few beam cannons.
and the Sobek? Way too heavily armoured. I've pitted it against a Hecate before, 1 on 1, and the Sobek won! And they were FACING each other to begin with, I mean surely the Hecate can destroy this thing??

The Hades was originally featured in the Silent Threat expansion pack for FreeSpace 1. Back in an age where beam cannons were nonexistent it could hold its own provided the destroyer's engines didn't get hit. Its FreeSpace 2 reincarnation sports similar weaponry, only with two BGreens where a different type of turret went. In other words, it was really never meant to see the year 2367.
The Hecate fares poorly in capital ship combat more often than not. You seem to think that the Hecate has substantual forward firepower; this is somewhat true, although it's BGreen (it's most powerful weapon - the strait firing green beam) takes 30 seconds to recharge while the Sobek's two forward orange slashers take 10 seconds to recharge and deal out a heavy amount of damage themselves. The Hecate really needs fighter support when it comes to capital ship engagements. Even with cruisers a Hecate cannot walk away without taking moderate damage without fighter cover.

I was able to kill it without time compression but not until I traded the default Ulysses fighter for an Ursa loaded to the brim with Harbingers.

The Hades was a Terran SD Lucifer basically. Built by the GTI and using Shivan technology. Go read the techroom in FS2. They mention the Hades Rebellion. Shivan technology like that was banned afterwards.

I used to be a member of Tokra.

I got a boxed version with FS1 and silent threat. It was like a special edition a year ago or so.
