The Freespace League: The Brainchild of Kusanagi
Hi all, Kusanagi here.
First off, this was an idea that I have had going around in my head for a while.
I propose to start a league for Freespace 2 that will continue this summer where 4 factions will battle it out for supremacy.
36 Star Systems.
4 Factions with 9 systems each - GTA, PVN, HOL, NTF.
First one to control all territories wins.
I am currently typing up the rules and ect. However, I would like to have this hosted here on VolitionWatch.
2 weeks ago I sent an email to Orange and I have not recieved a reply...
So...I was wondering if you could maybe bug him about this and give me your ideas and feedback.

A PXO League? Could be hard to organize... I'll ask on the internal...
Edit-I'm arguing with Orange on this right now.

Saturn M, its clear to me that your a stupid little person who just wants attention, probably becuase you cant get it from your parents in real life, no doubt you used to get into trouble just so that they would give you attention.
I think if you posted relevant, coherent things, you would get more responses and less abuse. Try reading your post before you submit it, or write it in word and run it through the spell check, so that you can see how pathetic your typing skills are.
I am wasting my time , i know, as im sure you can type just fine, but just incase use spell check. Dont bother trying to stir up abusive posts here, becuase its not a very busy board, try the cs forum if you want a lot of attention counter-strike.net

Saturn_M, that post there was much better. I am having trouble on your site you posted. all it says is Angelfire, and above it "efi". I couldn't find anything to click on. Do you know if that website is still working? or maybe my computer is just goofy, I don't know.

Waits patiently for a go or no go on this
OK, just to give you guys a little taste, here is an excerpt from the rules...
quote:
The Map and Turn System
The Map
The map is composed of the star charts from several sources, and has 36 systems. Every system is connected to another through the use of jump nodes. While most of the nodes exist in the FS2 universe, several nodes have been added in order to increase the scope of game play. The home system of each faction holds a drydock facility and an Arcadia base.
Territory will be designated by the color of a system. Light blue indicates the GTA is in control of that system, Yellow is the PVN, Green is the HOL, and finally Red is the NTF.
Starting systems for each faction are:
Parliamentary Vasudan Navy: Delphi, Tao Sigma, Altair, Aldebarran, Alphard, Vasuda, Alpha Centauri, Sirius, and Deneb.
Neo Terran Front: Kaus Borealis, Tania Austrailis, Mintaka, Regulus, Polaris, Procyon A, Epsilon Pegasi, Mirfak, and Adhara.
Hammer Of Light: Capella, Gamma Draconis, Vega, Antaries, Beta Aquilae, Ribos, Ikeya, Beta Cygni, and Betelgeuse.
Galactic Terran Alliance: Sol, Delta Serpentis, Ross 128, Laramis, N362, Luyten, Barnards Star, Dubbe, Epsilon Erandi
The home systems for each faction are as follows:
PVN: Altair
GTA: Sol
HOL: Vega
NTF: Polaris
The infiltration point for each faction is THREE JUMPS AWAY FROM THE FACTION'S HOMEWORLD.
Hence, you can win by just having three succesful wins.
Turns
There will be one turn every week. A faction may do several things in a turn:
Move: A faction may move any ship or ships to any system under their control if the ship can move that far.
Attack: If a faction moves a ship or fleet of ships into a system controlled by another faction, then a battle takes place. A faction can only make one attack move per week. This is discussed elsewhere.
Build: A faction has the ability to build ships. This is discussed elsewhere.
Defense: A faction can (and should) defend if another faction attacks their systems. In the worst case scenario a faction will make 3 defensive moves per week.
All actions for a turn will be due Wednesday at midnight of that week. A turn should be in the following format: (example follows)
Actions for turn ##:
Movement: 4 Cruisers and 1 Orion from Epsilon Erandi to Sol; 2 Cruisers and 2 corvettes from Epsilon Erandi to Dubbe, 1 Hectate from Ross 128 to Delta Serpentis
Attack: 2 Orions from Dubbe to Alphard
Build: Drydock at Sol to build Corvette, Drydock at Ross 128 build Orion for this turn and next turn
When a faction is attacked, a message will be posted on the defending faction’s board on Thursday morning letting them know what faction is attacking which system. However, they will not know the size of the force that is attacking them.
At this point, movement for the defensive team is considered void and the defending faction may choose to move ships to the system that is being attacked. The new movement submittal will be due THURSDAY AT MIDNIGHT.

RIGHT...
And when was the last time anyone heard anything about Squadwar? They havent even had any updates in, well, 5 months...
I've been to Squadwar. The reason I decided to do this was because NOTHING WAS HAPPENING IN SQUADWAR...and there are going to be things in this league that aren't in Squadwar.
Plus a squadwar TAKES TOO DAMN LONG! Instead of all these little squads that have maybe 4 members there will be 4 factions. This means that the game will go quicker and with a more decisive victory.
Look, I'm just a fan of Freespace 2 who is trying to kick some life back into the game. This type of strategy has worked for other games too.

Why dont you get a good coder of some sort to make a user-level interface on a website to automate all these 'moves' and 'actions'. It will save the admins for this league a lot of time, so they can spend more time on getting a server for the teams to battle on.
PS: Squadwar is dead for a reason, it wasn't organized universal domination -- it was more like organized squabbiling, and I believe the squadwar forum was the first forum to be shut down on the archaic VBB because of the flamboiancy of every thread.
PPS: Where's the Shivan front?!

I like it
Ship movement is good.
Adding some resource based stuff could be good, each planet produces X fighters, you only have what fighters your ship takes with you, so if you lose all of a fighter type (say, the stealth fighters, for the sake of argument) your side can't use any more of them. Make protecting bombers actually important Maybe bring the objectives back to some of the missions or validate new ones, so that not only do you have to protect bombers on missions, they actually have to bomb
Lots of mech leagues do this, where you have limited numbers of mechs of a certain chassis, a monthly production allowance for building new ones, trade provisions with other factions, jumpships to carry fixed numbers of machines to various places.
Anywho, sounds fun

If this was a basic tournament/PXO League type of arrangement properly managed I would support it. I do not believe that this as proposed would work properly in the FS community.

I am almost finished typing up the rules...
However, I agree the system is not perfect as no system is.
I am also basing this off of the playing style of a mecha league, where instead of individual fighters perchance, you have destroyers, cruisers, ect.
At the beginning, each faction recieves the following:
1 New Destroyer
2 Old school destroyers
6 Corvettes
15 Cruisers
(These can be placed anywhere the factions wish at the biggining of the league)
1 Arcadia and 1 drydock in home system
1 other drydock to be placed in any faction controlled system.
Movement: Each ship can move a certain number of nodes per turn:
New Destroyer: 1 node
Old Destroyer: 2 nodes
Corvette: 3 nodes
Cruiser: 4 nodes
I think this could work if I could actually get some support...

hell i would support it if the system was a little more fast paced, and there was a way to regulate. How are you going to make missions for these matches? it cant be the same all the time.
what i would suggest, since the FS2 source is out, start doing some programming for a leage-based client of FS2, connects to the dedicated server, got usernames and passwords, automatically detects what player has what match, etc. Im more for automated type stuff, but that's just me.
[edit]
not to mention a special interface utilizing voice comm for commanders, mission assembly, or 'directors'. with that type of play, you could get better team play.

Maps for battles:
Basically there will be 3 or 4 templates with just the following:
12 fighters on either side, about 10 km apart.
Now, the reason the turn submittals would be due on Thursday is simple. Once I know what ships are participating in a battle, all I need to do is simply put them into the map for a match on Saturday.
Oh, and I am looking at the source code, but there is one problem:
I have very little C++ programming skills.

Basically after sign up periods end, the factions will elect their own leaders.
