FS2 Rank Question
I was wondering if someone could explain something for me. When I win FS2 on medium difficulty I end up with all the medals and triple ace yet I only earn like 2 promotions. Considering there are like 8 or 9 ranks or something I'm wondering why I don't make it past ensign intil like 2/3 into the game. This has been bothering me so an explanation would be great. Thanks.

Ranking is about how much points you have. You must play the campaign again to see your rank upgraded.
Completing your objectives in the mission gives you points, as well as destroying ships or fighters... I don't know exactly how much point it takes, but it works a little like this:
1000 points = lieutenant Jr
2000 points = lieutenant
4000 points = lieutenant commander
6000 points = commander
...like this, all the way up.
You should download the excellent FS2 toolkit, including VPview, pilotview, ANIbuilder, and more, so you can get a clear view on how much points you have already and how much more you'll need to reach the next rank. You may find the kit in the download section of FSwatch.

There are some campaigns wich give you much more points. I finished one ( I think, Sirius Assault and others) as the Captain. I started as Lieutnant Jr, or something ( it was long tiem ago but I can remember I was receiving promotions quickly ).
BTW the fact I cannot reach at once, or almoust at once higher ranks is one of the things in the FS2 I like. See it`s very very rare to get a promotion one after another and if you read about some WWII Aces not many of them finished their war service as generals, colonels or majors ( and in most cases they were longer in the Army).

I think its something to do with you not killing enough enemies or not fulfilling enough bonus objectives.
EDIT: Anyone remember FS1's promotion text? "We're not quite sure how you managed to reach such a high rank. We think you cheated."

Thanks
Thanks for the input. I looked up the rank points and its like 4000, 10000, and goes from there. Then I opened up the ships table and noticed that the points for them are real low. Like most fighters are only worth 5 or 10 points and since you don't kill capital ships that often it could take a while just to get 4000 points. I never thought about replaying the campain to get more points. I guess I'm just sorta used to the 'you plan the game once you can acheive everything if done right' method most games emply. I can sleep knowing the answer to this. Thanks all.

In a method strangely similar to the real military you don`t get promotions and medals for flying simulator missions

Yeah, but your still shooting stuff exactly the same as in the campaigns.
It really should give you points for kills in stand alone missions, as long as you havent altered them to give yourself 10000points for killing a basilisk.

only campaigns and online standalones count for points.
And while medals look cool, you really shouldnt be playing games from promotions or medals seeing as they dont really exist and dont really mean anything. Especially since they're so easy to award oneself if ye know how to fred.
just my 2 cents.

About 20 seconds in the campaign editor allows you to write little 1 mission campaigns around those missons allowing you to gain points for them.
