FS2 Registry Entries
A long time ago, I had to trash my Windows installation (bad HD). The FS2 installation was on a separate drive, so survived. Of course, the Registry entries made by the installer were lost along with Windows, so the Autorun from the CDs no longer worked.
Up to now, I've been satisfied with able to launch it from the installed directory, and I've not lost my pilots and HUD setup. However, I just tried to install a campaign, but the installer can't find FS2 because the Registry entry was missing...
I'm not too afraid of editing the Registry, so can some knowledgeable soul let me know what to put where? I've found the keys that contain the graphics preferences.
TIA

wouldn`t it be simpler to copy the data/players directory (or indeed the whole of the data diectory if you`ve got mods) and then just re-install?

I Hate Windows
Retry, Reboot, Reinstall - the mantra of the tech support line.
I suppose I could move the directory and backup the existing Registry entries, but I really don't want to lose the stuff I've set up. I'm one of those people who likes to replay specific missions (frustration vent), and having to re-complete the game to do that would be a little trying.
All I really need is the name of the Registry entry that points FS2's Launcher (and other installers) to the right place.

Despite Ashrak's attitude, he is right.
Your HUD, mod data, and pretty much every setting is stored in folders under /data. So, move the current /data folder to somewhere safe. Then, delete everything under /FreeSpace2 and then reinstall the game.
Then, as Ashrak said, copy that stuff back in there and you'll be off with no problems. Easy as pie, or cake...or something chocolate
And if you don't believe me, I have 6 /data folders lying around that I just move in and out to test different MOD's.

In fact if you haven`t got any mods installed all you need to copy is the data/players file. All the info you need is in there. Your hud configs and pilot data is all saved in there. If you back that up you won`t need to replay any missions.
If you`ve got mods then a backup of your data directory is all that you need. (unless it's one like deralict that also installs .vp files (in which case you`ll also need to copy them).
You won`t have an registry entries at the moment anyway so there isn`t any need to worry about that.
A re-install is almost 100% likely to work first time with no problems.
Editing the registry will probably take you longer and isn`t anywhere near as likely to work.

Yeah, do what they tell you to. Copy any files you may need to a backup folder and reinstall. Then replace the backups, overwriting what's already there if you have to.
Like Karajoma said, registry changes don't always work. You could end up with more problems.
