Seem to be having some bad luck with FS2

My desire to start playing FS2 again has hit a set-back that I cannot seem to figure out.

I was sure it was working before I downloaded the FS port files. My first problem was in the main FS2 campaign, I didn't have any access to weapons. I deleted all the FS port files and still didn't have any weapons. I decided to uninstall FS2 and do a fresh install, and since then the computer either locks or completely reboots every time I attempt to load it. The furthest I've got is in the main hangar, but the doors that you click on to play a mission brought me to a multiplayer menu instead of the campaign menu. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, even in different folders, and have had the same results.

Here's the specs of the system:

XP1900+
Soyo Dragon + Mobo (KT266a)
768mb Corsair XMS2400
GeForce 3 Ti500
SB Audigy
465w Enermax PSU
Windows XP Home
and the other usual suspects.

Could the actual CDs be messed up, or what? I'm at a loss.

Uninstalling does not remove the pilot files or the MOD files. So totally delete the directory or move it and then reinstall after the uinstallation (clear as mud?).

I removed the directory each time I uninstalled it, so that there was absolutely nothing on the system each time I reinstalled. I even checked the registry to make sure there wasn't anything there.

I have exactly the same problem, for the same reasons. Weird. That is annoying since, as you said, even deleting the registry keys is useless...

Well, you sure you're not making an MP pilot?
Make sure you get v1.02 for FS2 - the stock 1.00 had issues with me and XP.
Go to the pilot change room in the hangar and doublecheck your pilot is sp, and all okay like that, then go to campaigns and make sure the main FS2 campaign is selected.

Or, reinstall the mod you were playing last - what I'm thinking is the pilot looks for "whatever mod campaign" and it can't find it and goes haywire. But if it can find that mod campaign, then maybe it'll let you switch back to FS2 main.

I'm just throwing out ideas here, since FS2's never given me trouble ...

Alright, here's a update:

I was having some trouble reinstalling FS2, it would freeze at 62% until it gave me a error message and stopped the install. I thought it could be because the discs were all scratched up due to those stupid cardboard sleeves Interplay put them in, so I used a GameDR and removed all the scratches. After that I was able to install the game without any problems, and went to Volition's website and downloaded the patch and installed that too.

Unfortunately that didn't help, as soon as it came to the pilot logon screen it rebooted the computer. After that, every time I try and play it the screen will go black for half a second and come back to the desktop. Here's a portion of the error log, if anyone knows how to figure these things out:

FS2 caused an Access Violation in module Unknown at 001b:ffffffff.
Exception handler called in Freespace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 6/18/2002 19:39:34.
C:\games\freespace2\FS2.exe, run by Christopher.
1 processor(s), type 586.
768 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location ffffffff caused an access violation.

I really don't want to have to rollover the OS, but I might have to.

only thing I can think of to help is to make sure there are no other MOD files for FS2 on your PC... they might not have installed all of the files under your Freespace2 dir.

Weird. I'm really at a loss. I mean, I assume you've done the standard things of Windows Update, (including Compatibility Updates), making sure DirectX is up to date, you've got updated video card drivers...

Well, crap.

I decided to do a XP "repair" reinstall, and then reloaded the display drivers, NVRefreshRateFix, and every Critical Update, recommended update and MS driver update. In the end it had absolutely no effect on the FS2 problem.

It cannot be a mod, since I've uninstalled and reinstalled FS2 several times in several different locations and I haven't even been able to keep FS2 running long enough to do anything with it. It will let me get to the pilot logon screen, but as soon as I try to enter a name it hangs or completely reboots the system. After that, FS2 will simply not load.

This really bites, as it seems like I won't be playing one of my favorite games until I have to completely scrap everything and go with a dual-boot setup. Not good.

Could it possibly be the actual FS2 CDs?

Your mod's "pilot file" will still override your regualr Freespace 2 one... I had a smiliar problem trying to get FS to work after I was done with the B5 Mod....
I deleted everything under FS directory, and reinstalled, but it would crash after it got to the log on screen... I was finally able to track down the problem to having a few mods that were on there that had not been installed under the FS dir, and they were taking precedent over the current installation. But since the game files for the mod WERE under the FS directory and deleted with the rest of the stuff, the pilot file would cause my system to crash due to the missing files I guess... I looked all on my C: drive and finally found the mod files that were still on my drive, and that were unzipped, so I deleted them, restarted the computer and FS2 worked fine....
Maybe mine is an isolated issue, but sounds kinda like what is happeneing on your system

Oooh... bad mods...
Pilot files always search for their mods. Deleting the mods should make everything better.
