Question lag on dedicated server, something wrong

Whenever I play RF and start up my dedicated server theres a horrible lag that I cant account for. Not the kind of lag that you would expect after so many people sighn on you server but someting else. the pings sometimes skyrocket up to 2000+ ( all of them). and play becomes next to impossible. I have as of yet to be able to get more then 4-5 people on with out major problems.

My connection is DSL gold 768 and im running dedicated on a pentium 900 with 700+ ram. this all goes through a linksys 4 prot switch router that is set to gateway mode and currently has 4 pcs hooked to it.. but only 2 run on average at a time.
My os is xp pro. on all pcs.
with these figures and stats I should be getting a wayway better connectoin for dedicated. when i simply play on another server I ussually have one of the lowest pings.

Another factor to be considered is that my email in outlook comes through twice .. been that way for a while now. and i dont know why. I only have one account with outlook.( homail ) .
And in RF when serving everybodys speesh that they type in comes across to everybody else as double. twice in a row. when i play on a separate server I get everbodys messages like this all the time.
I experience this on all the pcs on my lan and am stumped at why.
could this be the reason for my strange lag problem?
is it possible sending double packets? and if so how do i fix this.
thank you for you help

one last thing , cause I know this is coming... Then lag that I am refering to is not normal, it is very obvioulsy something else beside normal lag that is hindering the performance.
I have it up right now in RF ... name is" Farslayers nightmare ( I wish)" ...hehe... its in the ctf section

Server problems can be tricky to diagnose. I'd suggest formatting your server and reinstalling everything. You'd be surprised how often that fixes things.

Yes Dynamo reinsatlling will fix this if that is the prob, but I have come acress this before, a fellow clan memeber and I had a game, only me an him playing...he created and he has a high speed cable line . When i joined HE was pinging at 238 LOL and Evn i was lower hehe (whihc is not very often), I told him to go out and restart his pc...he did and his ping was back to zero etc etc, obvisoulsy something was eating up his resources etc etc. Vettinit try resarting your pc if you want to put your dedicated on but don;t forget running a dedi and playing from same pc can be unstable Sometimes Remember about 2 weels ago vettinit I came into your sever and was pinging fine and there was 3 or 4 plyers in and i am on 56k so its got to be somthing your pc is doing?!!!!!!

I have been getting that 2 mail outlook thing as well, two of teh same message...seems to have stoped now but who knwo HEHE ....

Well, before you reformat, try the standard system cleanup tools like a scandisk, defrag, memtest, et cetera. They might help (at least a little, even if they don't solve the entire problem.)

It's probably nothing with your systems themselves - but a setting in network setup. I would try this: disconnect ALL not used devices from network so it's running naked and clean - then connect one after the other while each time checking the results for ping ....

to defrag etc. is nonsense (sorry) and has no influence on network-probs !

wanted to put this back on top here so could try and get some answers again.
since date of this post i have upgraded my dsl service to 1500/368 hoping for a dramativ difference. but i did not get it.
in fact when it comes to hosting it really didnt make a difference that much.
i even lag at 3 people... and for all you who are gonna say this.. no no no it aint my pc... it aint it aint.. i know this cause i build pcs and happen to have like 4=5 laying around and have tried different ones.
could i tbe my router? is it somehow blocking me or slowing down my connection? or maybe just good ol rf?

re: lag

You metioned running xp pro, check your settings in your task manager. Xp has a setting where you can set the priority of a running program in allocating the amount of CPU use and memory use used for a certain pragram. Another thought is bypassing your router. Hook your computer directly into your DSL modem and test to see if you continue to get lag. If you get no lag then you know its a setting or had something to do with your router. If the lag continues its your pc. If you find out that it is your router than you might want to check its firewall settings. I myself had some problems with my router until I updated its firmware and set my pc to a socket that wasnt covered by the firewall on the router. Hope this helps you out man. Good luck to you.

cassi (4:37 PM) :
you got your thinking head on?
dloneranger (4:37 PM) :
i think so?
cassi (4:38 PM) :
lol
dloneranger (4:39 PM) :
why dat den
cassi (4:39 PM) :
my m8 has a prob with his ded server 4 RF can u take a look at this link & give him a clue if you can plz http://www.volitionwatch.com/vwbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5896
dloneranger (4:42 PM) :
? not enough info to even try and guess
cassi (4:43 PM) :
np i'll get him to post more indepth details
dloneranger (4:43 PM) :
i cant see how yo can go wrong with rf dedicated server
dloneranger (4:44 PM) :
as long as he's not playing rf on the same machine as the dedicated is running on, it shouldn't be a prob
cassi (4:44 PM) :
not sure i think its his router but hes not having it
dloneranger (4:45 PM) :
there's too many variables to check
does it work ok in lan games, can he try a hub instead just to test with etc ??
dloneranger (4:46 PM) :
has he disabled the xp built in firewall ?
cassi (4:46 PM) :
i'll ask him to post all details indepth see then
dloneranger (4:48 PM) :
he can check the task manager and make sure nothing weird is running at the same time as well
dloneranger (4:54 PM) :
he can check his registry as well
currentuser/volition/red faction
updaterate and forceport are the 2 netwok bits in there
cassi (4:55 PM) :
k wat prob can they cause
dloneranger (4:55 PM) :
depends on what they've been set to ;-)
cassi (4:56 PM) :
k wat r they spossed to be
dloneranger (4:57 PM) :
the rate depends on his network speed
offhand i cant remember if it's per user or total
eg if i'v got 10k out, is it 5k per user or 10k total
cassi (4:58 PM) :
k i'll let him know
dloneranger (4:58 PM) :
if it's set too high you will get huge retries and lag, as everything blocks up
cassi (4:59 PM) :
cool i think that may help
dloneranger (5:01 PM) :
my update rate is 4000
and thats for 4-5 players on 128k upload speed
cassi (5:01 PM) :
& that runs ok yeah ?
dloneranger (5:02 PM) :
it has when we've played here ok hasn't it ?
cassi (5:02 PM) :
yeah true
dloneranger (5:03 PM) :
faster would be better, but then i'd have less players

dloneranger (5:03 PM) :
if it's set too high, you'll have lag with just 1 player <grin>
cassi (5:04 PM) :
got ya i think the reg thing may help cause he aint mentioned do any there
dloneranger (5:05 PM) :
it's just the setup - network option -speed bit

dloneranger (5:05 PM) :
ooh - there is one thing he can do to check !
cassi (5:05 PM) :
??
dloneranger (5:06 PM) :
he can run perfmon, add the network in and out bytes per sec and see how much it's trying to send
dloneranger (5:06 PM) :
you know - that graph thing
cassi (5:06 PM) :
k
dloneranger (5:07 PM) :
i'll just check my xp version, i think it may have another option as well
cassi (5:07 PM) :
k
dloneranger (5:10 PM) :
hmm there is another bit on there, but it doesnt give enough info - just a graph, no numbers
cassi (5:10 PM) :
np thx 4 your help
dloneranger (5:10 PM) :
's ok
cassi (5:10 PM) :
lol

Vett post all prob & what you've done

Whee!

YALL CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have beaten the foe! the server is up and running 300% better then it was.
what was the solution. everybody kept telling me to turn the bandwidth down on it. so i got to thinking... down? I want each player to have more bandwidth not less! so i jacked my connection rate up to lan which comes across at a reported speed of 200,000 ( dont know how accurate that is..) and low and behold! i am now featuring games of 12+/- with ease..finnaly.
I knew I had the bandwidth and hardware. just one little setting. sigh
come on by and check out CLAN X DED.SERVER now running mainly user made maps.

vettinit-X-: That wasn't sarcastic at all...stop looking for instances where people are out to get you and you find that they actually aren't.
