Yes, you need a development environment such as Microsoft Visual C++ and a compiler. Without VC++ you're up for a hard task.

Editing source code is not for the weak of heart or the inexperienced C++ programmer.

You can read them with notepad.
If you're as inexperienced as I am, it's a good idea, because a/ you'll learn to recognise keywords, etc, without fancy highlighting and b/it'll probably force you to try and learn a bit more before looking for good tools to actually do proper work with.
(i.e. I started off with microsoft Paint and Blender for modelling, and have been able to progress to more advanced / professional stuff as I've learned.) It's been the same with Java - from simple text editors to a little more complicated stuff.... what i mean, is that really good tools offer lots of functionality you don't need to know when you're learning and will only confuse you.
(sorry, was that just a looad of rubbish I typed? )

Heall no! MSVB 6.0 est. $79.00 for standard edition, and MSVC++ est. $129.00 for STUDENT version. Do the math . Anyway, what you want is here.

Which program? The GCC compiler, or msvc++? In order to buy the student version of MSVC++, you must show a college ID and/or a current transcript, proving you are a student learning MSVC++. If you want GCC, you have to download CVS, GYGWIN, and some updated lib files.

CYGWIN
Updated lib files

Post here again when you have everything downloaded, I will tell you how to set it up.
