Depends what you mean by edited.... to alter the game properties (subvsystems, lights, gunpoints, etc), you can use PCS or modelview.
to extract the actualy model and alter it, you have to use PCS to convert it to cob format (and VPView to extract the pof file), and then to recompile it and re-add the data.

I seem to remember that one of the tools lets you choose which lod to extract. It doesn`t really matter. You can always extract them all and then delete the ones you don`t want.

the way im running it spits out the models with all the lods, turrents, and debris in one cob file with each lod/turrent/debris as a seperate object in the model. thats fine for the fighters and bombers where i can go into milkshape and delete the objects i dont want but milkshape doesnt like haveing mulitple texture on one object so when i try to delete the parts of capships that i dont want i end up with a capship with one texture.

Surely the same thing would happen if you did manage to extract LOD0 on it's own?
Anyway My suggestion is to get hold of TS2 or TS1 (both are available for free download but I can`t remember the sites) and do the heirachy stuff in that and then use milkshape.
