Weapons

Hello everyone.
Just a quick note- I'm an avid Freespace and Descent pilot, not too involved in the community, but I like FPSs as well. I don't have a copy of Red Faction yet, but will soon.
I thought I'd start this thread because weapon suggestions are like callsigns; everyone's got one. My personal contribution- remember in the Hall Fight one of the Terran commandos had a Banshee? Take a close look, it has the telltale metallic green oval muzzle. That would be a great weapon, but with the time period you want, it might not happen. I do think that the Ml-16 laser should be one of the more powerful weapons in the game, even though it was the weakest to start with. And how about a Vasudan sniper rifle?

Even though the weapons used in the Hall Fight cutscene looked similar to Banshee cannons they seemed to fire matter projectiles and lacked the tell-tale "Scream" that the Banshee was supposed to have in an atmospheric environment.

Instead that particular weapons has been dubbed (For now at least) the Pletcher X700 (Which is listed on the weapons page). It's named after Adam Pletcher who was largely responsible for Freespace to begin with.

And don't forget that Galactic Terran Intelligence generally gets to play with a lot of technology that the rest of the GTA won't see for a few years as it's developed. You may see a few things that would normally be considered "new" in the FS1 campaign of 2335.

Um, many weapons had oval muzzles, but as Plasma said, they appeared to and sounded like they were firing projecticles, not sound bolts. It could be something as simple as a shrouded barrel to prevent dust and junk getting into it, kind of like the MiG-29's protected intake vents so when landing on grass fields dust doesn't choke the turbojets.

...snipers, not sniper's.
snipers = plural of sniper.
sniper's = sniper posesseses an object (e.g. the sniper's car)

Now....your pansy Vasudan sniper rifle cannot stand up to the l33tn3ss of the Barrett .50

Similarly, bigger is worse for snipers...bigger = easier to see. Easier to see = dead.

I totally agree here. I mean they have all those ship weapons, someone would have made a damn powerful handheld one.

I also believe that vasudans would use these sort of weapons, as they just seem far to advanced to use mere projectile weapons.

Well, the fighter weapons are meters long at best... and probably require the ship's reactor to power... I wouldn't really like to be the one carrying those buggers around

"as they just seem far to advanced"

If their 'so advanced' why didn't they steal the shield specs from the Shivans, or invent their own shields?

did anyone see the eps od ST DSN when some crazy vulcan had a sniper rifle that could shoot anythign anywhere cause it transported the bullets to the side jsut after they had been fired - it occured to me not only was this weapon leathal long ranger - but super stealthy - why did they abandon it in favour of phasers which when you fire light up your position for everyone to see????

this is why i think projectile weapons will still have a future - they will jsut become longer ranger probally tracking - i saw a thing on tracking bullets and the point of origin cant be seen

Tracking bullets are pretty popular in sci-fi. Off the top of my head I remember an episode in the new Invisible Man, and of course the movie 5th Element. A very cool effect for a gun, I wonder if you can make the bullets tracking like a rocket.

Um, given ballistic physics knowledge, no you can't. I mean, you could in theory put some fins on the sucker and program them to deploy in a certain pattern giving you limited ballistic capability, but none of that Recall ability like the ZORG-1 had. That plus you'd jack the price-per-bullet up into the stratosphere, since instead of a metal slug you'd have an integrated computer circuit plus the gun would have to have a way to load the information into the round ...

The only "guided bullet" I know of is the special 20mm grenades the OCIW carries, and they only have a timed detonator, not guidance.

Excuse me for being blunt, but tracking bullets, while a nice sci-fi idea, are total nonsense.

What is a bullet? It is a piece of metal about twice the size of the pencil eraser you're chomping down on now. No explosive (usually), no nothing.

So whay does it do damage? Pure speed. Therefore, if you had a tracking bullet, it would have to be able to maintain its speed in order to be useful. With course/trajectory changes and the like, there is no way that speed would be able to be maintained unless there was a whole rocket propulsion system onboard.

And just think of how you would "aim"? Ummm... target is around 2 corners, lessee.... uhhh.... Oh, of course! the bullet would have an onboard GPS to uplink to a satellite and downlink again to the gun that would specify the location of the target , and...

sombody has seen this movie with Tom Selec (sp)? I think it was called Runaway, and was about a terrorist that reprogrammed robots to comit crimal acts. The bad guy had a weapon shooting homing bullets, heat tracking. I think that copuld be achieved with a G-well, like the one used onboard the Pyro in Descent. Anyway, of course, realisticly talking, that's maybe centuries beyond the GTA tech during the terra/vasudan war.

I'm pretty sure experimental seeking bullets have actually been developed... they use some sort of tiny servo to shift the mass of the bullet, and alter its trajectory. Although i think they are pretty ;arge caliber (maybe mounted guns only)

I'm sure I read this somewhere......

I know I read a bunch about the new US Solider...Land Warrior I think its called (memory lapse) and one of the tests was a laser guided bullet.

You just need a small optic sensor and the laser on your rifle and you're set. It would definately be a larger projectile since they were looking at pin-point armor penetration.

The Reactor

For a start, only one third of that reactor is designated for keeping weapons at full strength, and this wouldn't need a reactor. It would run off power cells or something. (It is an FPS after all...run around and pick up ammo before shooting things).

Second of all, a specifically designed handheld version would be specifically designed to be small...think of the comparison between a 1700s cannon and a 1700s musket.

Of course. Hence the phrase 'fighter weapons'. If they're designed for infantry, they're not 'fighter weapons', are they?

Most of the energy weapons in the game will either be independent static turrets or on larger vehicles. Infantry energy weapons are generally large and difficult to handle despite being powerful, so the GTA is generally sticking to projectile weaponry until technology allows for energy weapons to be contained in smaller packages. There's sort of a transition going on between standard and case-less ammunition, too.
