Help!!!!

I recently added some new ships from mods and some new weapons to my .tbl files. I used word pad to modify them. Now when I run freespace it crashes when it tries to load the breifing. It lights up the first 3 parts and then crashes. Any fixes other than a reinstall?

Cool

All of the original game data is saved in thingies called .vp files that are either on your hard drive or the CD's depending on your install choice. Regardless, the game always looks to these first unless you've got custom tables in your data/tables directory.

To undo what you've done, simply delete anything in your FreeSpace2/data/tables directory. Or, if it's something important you've been working on, move it to another folder. Either way, clear out your data/tables folder and the game will reset back to normal. No reinstall required.

However, if you installed new game material as well (like new textures, models, or sounds) that is referenced to in the original table files, then you could still have problems. If this is the case, simply empty your data/models and data/maps directory (the usual culprits), and if necessary, meticulously search your FreeSpace2/data directory for anything that wasn't there when you originally installed.

If you're still having problems, uninstall, delete, and reinstall.

Note that it's also possible the MODs you tried out weren't installed correctly. Maybe all the files that came with them didn't go to their proper directories, for instance.

No. I simply took some mod files and opened them up. I copied the new stuff to my files so I have several mods in one file. (E.G. I have a user-made bomber and a different user-made fighter in the same file.)

So you changed the Table file to include a number of separate MODs?

Probably what happened is you hit the file size limit for the ships.tbl.

I think the memory limit for the tables is 380kb. Unaltered, the original ships.tbl can support about four (?) new, fully featured table entries. Delete the tech descriptions on the original and MODded ships to buy yourself some more space if need be.

If a lot of new models were installed with these MODs it could cause complications, however. For instance, the ships.tbl could refer to the nonexistent turrets/subsystems of an original ship.

In any event, emptying your data/tables folder should remedy the problem.

Had the same problems. I put seweral new ships and weapons. I received something really mixed, but THE problem was every newe ship meant the old add-one was deleted.
Another thing, strange for me, the game began to work extremely slowly, although meanwhile the resolution turned to the lower one ( 860-640 or something ).
I managed to low down all problems it`s OK now, but i had to remove almoust everything added ( except Acammon and MBlaster, couldn`t farewell with it! ) ... Now I `ll try do it again.

The solution to this would be to delete unwanted vessels.
(If you really want those MODs)

Probably cos every mod had it's own ships.tbl with it..... ships.tbl is the full listing of all ships in the game, so you need to add new entries into it.

Not sure on why you'd get slowdown, though. Maybe polycount (unlikely). I've had some wierd slowdown myself experimenting with the Nightmares, but I think it was the number & size of the textures in the misisons.

Maybe when you used wordpad you saved them as something other than raw ASCII text? Doublecheck you didn't add formatting like Word or RTF format or something...

Thanks for resposne. It must be the ships.tbl. I`d like to resolve the problem by making new entries, but I have no software to change the file. How can I get it, if possible? Guess it can be downloaded somewhere from.

Problems with slowdown disappeared after one day and launching the game for several times.

Wish I could do something with .tbl files.
Thanks .

Tools for modding you can get here:
http://www.descent-network.com/descman/
(To extract tbl files for example)

And you can use notepad or wordpad to edit tbl-files.

Although in my experience, Notepad can't handle a file that big.
