Exclamation Battle Group/Fleet layout

Of a standard battle group, it consists of at least (I assume) one destroyer and at least (I assume) two escorts. The battle group layout that I am doing for my own missions is confusing. It consists of 1 HECATE, 2 DEIMOS, 1 AEOLUS, 1 LEVIATHIAN, and 2 FENRIS. I am unsure whether or not to have the escorts flak the destroyer on the SIDES, or have the cruisers cover the sides and have the two corvettes take the lead ahead of the destroyer. Other words:

Escort…..Destroyer…..Escort
Escort…Escort…Escort…Escort

Or

……Escort……….Escort
Escort……Destroyer…….Escort
Escort…….Escort………..Escort

The first layout gives the battle group the most firepower, but it leaves the main ship vunerable to head-on attacks, while the sides are defended great. The second layout provides the best defensive layout, but limits the firepower of the destroyer itself.

I’ve tried many many layouts, and those two are the ones that I think work most effectively. (I put them up on FRED2 and place about 10 wings of hostiles of 4 some 9km away from destroyer, and just have them “engage” while with three wings of fighters of four each.)

--If you can offer your help, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Well what can I tell I think some battle groups consist of more cruisers and maybew corvettes. I think there are about 2- 3 Aeolus class cruisers, at least 2 corvettes and other.

Personal idea: I made a fleet for special tasks which consists of one Hecate destroyer and one Orion, which ( it is NOT a MOD ) carries the fighter wings and has only flak as armament. That`s why it`s named GTDI.

Anything more?

Hmmm....one thing you might one to consider that is often forgotten about in some missions: ships can also come in from above and below. From what I gather, if a single corvette or group of cruisers were to attack from the dorsal or ventral sides of the formation, they could score some damaging hits on the flagship.

Then again, if you position the Demios corvettes correctly, they could be in a good position to respond to such attacks. They could come about and use their hulls to shield the destroyer from an offensive launched at the top or bottom of the destroyer.

I usually have the destroyer in the middle, two corvettes, one above and to the left, one below and to the right, then four or five cruisers filling in the holes. And of course the usual fighter wing patrol.

I place two corvettes on the sides, one above and one below the formation. So they can open fire in every direction.
Destroyer: if an Orion with beam rays on the side it`s the best to place her in the very middle of the formartion, but giving much place.
When Hecate, than she can be placed at the front.
Good escort is a wing of Artemis bomners, which can quickly turm off strong enemy.
