gmax - for you f00z cryin' for a 3D editor...
It's great for newbies wanting to get a handle on learning to model, but as for exporting to some format that we can handle...well, unless you already have 3D Studio Max 4, forget it unless you find the so-called "game packs" which are essentially plugins that let you design, texture, animate, place gunpoints, etc. on models and export them into the game's native model format in one fell swoop. Pretty efficient, but unfortunately, only the game developers have the ability to write the game packs. So far the only games that are likely to have this mongrel of a download included (and with the packs) are MS Flight Simulator 2002 and Dungeon Siege. Maybe the guys over at Descent-Network would be interested in compiling a plugin for Freespace 2? The game packs (according to Discreet) are written up easily enough in C++...
If you want it, check here and pick your poison, "Consumer" or "Developer".
Sadly, the Developer edition doesn't look like it can be sold to private individuals.

Yeah ... I mentioned this a long time ago. It's still worth trying out; I haven't personally used it but I like the concept.
And from what I hear the Developer edition is what's used to make gMax plugins (game-specific ones) so the consumers can import straight into their games ... or something like that. It's been a LONG time since I read about gMax.

on another note, I got the patch for TS, and ts 4.3 can flawlessly import textured .3DS files. No more texturing in TS for me!

well it's easy, just go to the website, download the patch, key in your product registration information (obtained with your legal copy of Truespace 4) and bob's yer uncle.
If you don't have any product registration information, then I'm afraid your stuck.

So, is there an inexpensive 3D program for us poor folks out here? Or is nothing under the $300 mark?

Maya's also putting out a free trial version, considering Maya licenses usually start at $7500 and for the full package hit something ungodly like $16000, a free (heavily limited) version ought to be great to 'learn the ropes' so to speak and then consider buying the whole thing.
It'll be interesting to see if warez kiddies who are like "I just use it to learn from!" actually follow up on that excuse and get a free legal Maya...

The problem is when they limit it too much. Like some or all of the Truespace trials. You can't save anything, except maybe press Printscreen

Ice: The Maya trial has a specialized proprietary format so you can't use it as a fully featured Maya, but you can save your work and all that. You just can't import it into other things (or so the idea goes) ...
