Its likely the stick is the problem, some wont even install, specialy those that require drivers, go to its website for new compatible drivers, if doenst help, get a new joystick.
check this out, might help also.
http://www4.tomshardware.com/consumer/01q4/011109/index.html
see wich ones are compatible with winXP.

It works with all the other games, I have the newest drivers, and it worked PERFECTLY with regular FS TODAY. but, right after I installed TBP, Freespace no longer detects it. Strange? worked five minutes before I installed it!

Go to FS2 launcher and start setup, there is joystick section.
Detect joysticks and choose right one.
Also updating your joystick's drivers might be helpful, my MS Sidewinder Precision Pro USB is working fine without any detections and new drivers.

Uninstall FS2 and try again. Then it should work.
...At least it's a good theory...
Or then your computer is just totally crap and you have to buy completely new one....

what?!
Are people READING what I'm saying or am I just not saying it clearly?
I have GONE to the settings/detect joystick, it finds NONE, ZERO NO JOYSTICK. It IS connected, Control Panel/ devices sees it, I can configure it, use it in other games, etc. FREESPACE ALONE can detect it with NO PROBLEM. However, AFTER installing The Babylon Project, It CANNOT FIND THE JOYSTICK! YES I've done the Settings/Detect Joystick, NO it does not see it. YES I've installed the latest Drivers.
Now, is THAT clear enough?

What stick is it? Does it use a USB or a game port?

OK
Logitech Wingman Force - USB
Very odd. I uninstalled TBP, and Freespace. Reinstalled Freespace WITHOUT TBP, and it won't detect the joystick.
HELP!

Well.. lets get this in here -
The Babylon Project contains NO files that could conflict with a joystick, and has NO function that could conflict with a joystick.
TBP is a collection of freespace missions, wav files, models, PCX images and text files in the /data directory of Freespace 2.
There is NOTHING that TBP can have done to break or disable your joystick.

OK...
so what did I do?
Order of events:
Installed FS
opened freespace, configured graphics card, sound, joystick, internet, speed.
opened main game, went to options, configured graphics, joystick key bindings.
started mission to test it out, everythings fine.
Installed TBP core, High-res, sound, and animations
opened Freespace, started mission. Whoops! joystick doesn't work!
OK, exited freespace, went to freespace options, no joystick detected.
checked joystick connection, fine.
went to control panel, game devices. connected OK
went back to FS, detect joysticks. none found.
uninstall TBP, uninstall Freespace.
install freespace --> option --> detect joystick, none found.
HELP!

Damn beat me to the patch thing. About your upgrade. Did you format your hd and install XP or did you upgrade from another OS and if so which one?

To reiterate what Xaphod said, there is NOTHING repeat, NOTHING in The Babylon Project demo pack that could possibly have any impact on any hardware, software, or devices attached to your computer.
FreeSpace 2 relies on the Joystick profiles from Control Panel. So, open up the FreeSpace 2 launcher, click setup, and select the joystick from there. Re-detect if necessary, but that list that FS2 builds on there is the same that is listed in Control Panel.

Thats just it, Control Panel sees the joystick, but searching for it though the freespace launcher yealds no results!
and it's a new computer, only had win XP on it.

Good thing you just didn't upgrade the version of windows you had because the old OSs really mess up XP. I had ME on my system and did a straight upgrade and no reformate and it messed up all my hardware and nothing worked right.
Since you have a new pc I hope you don't have too much on it because the only thing I can suggest is a format and reinstalling EVERYTHING. The manufacturer should have also included a copy of XP with the system and I'm not talking about the restoration disk I mean an actual Win XP disk. Never use restoration disks. Using those is only asking for trouble in the furture<.
<EDIT and IMPORTANT note> My suggestion is a LAST resort. Try all other possibilities first.

Okay.. its a Force feedback USB joystick.. so try:
plugging it into the other USB port
uninstalling then reinstalling the joystick
checking your joysticks power supply (if it has an external power source)
checking your joystick in the device manager (assuming XP isn't that much different to Win2K Pro)
Other than that.. well, I'm stumped.. if it had NEVER worked in FS2, then I could understand it as FS2 not liking USB joysticks, or your joystick in particular.. but I don't understand this. The game settings are not touched when you install TBP - FS2 should just run as normal. Your computers settings are not affected by TBP being installed either, so something else has happened.
Anything that has happened though, would be fixed when you uninstalled then reinstalled Freespace2 (provided you don't install TBP, then FS2 should work) so I'm stumped again
All I can think of - and this is me really racking my brains here - maybe the hi-res registration hack has somehow affected your joystick.. I don't think it can have done - in fact I am 99.999% certain that it hasn't done... and this should also be fixed when you uninstall/reinstall FS2... so I'm stumped.

heh, your not the only one.
oh well, I mean, I've uninstalled Freespace AND my joystick twice now. no luck. guess I'll have to go back to my MS Sidewinder precision pro.
going to miss those force feedback effects though, what little I got of them was fun!
