Can anyone help?

I've been trying to transfer one or two B5 episodes and movies from video cassette to computer (CD), so I can bring them with me to play at university during term time, and have had difficulty in recording the sound. The picture comes out fine but there is no sound. I was wondering if this is likely to be a hardware or a software problem. I have the same problem for recording TV as well and am using a standard coaxial cable to connect the VCR to the computer.
