Relative Ship Abilities In The Mod

I was just thinking about the relative capabilities of the ships of the various races and how some races are far more technologically advanced than others. Now I was wondering just how powerful you were going to make vessels like the Shadow Battlecrab and Vorlon Dreadnought?

I ask because for the Minbari War ships I get the feeling that you spent a lot of time trying to make sure that the ships were balanced relative to the show. If you continued this for the Shadows and Vorlons then they would be pretty darn powerful

Fighters aren't such of a problem because regardless of armament no fighter is so tough that it can't be destroyed by another. I think that you could maintain the show's balance if the missions are well written

Yep.

Actually , Shadows and Vorlons ( except their little fighters ) won't be subject to mission objectives. YOU in your role as a fighter pilot cannot oppose the vorlon transport or the shadow battlecrab , you wouldn't survive it.
Therefore , those bigger firstones vessels will have fully scripted and planned appearances. Missions like "Shoot the crab before it shoots your carrier" would be ridiculous.

Firstones will most likely appear as the obscure and superstrong powers like in the earlier seasons. No "my vorlon pal from the neighbourhood" or "shadow-shooting-session" plots , more likely "they came , looked and shot everything to pieces" plots.

In a battle with First Ones such as with Shadow dancing, the fighters would have the role of keeping enemy fighters busy. Its your main fleet ships that could do damage, if any, to a Shadow or Vorlon vessel.

Babylon 5 combat is structured like this.

Fighters are meant to engage other fighters. Fighters cannot directly engage another capital ship. However, a capital ship with no fighter cover or having its fighter cover been removed, can be picked apart by fighters who will destroy its defenses and pick it apart piece by piece.

A capital ship is usually required to destroy another capital ship. So fighters rarely take on a capital ship by themselves. Instead, they distract, disable, and disarm enemy capital ships and pave the way for a friendly ship to rip the target apart.

It's 'Into the Fire' and it's bloody spectacular. Need a P4 2GHz, GeForce3 and 1GB RAM to run it though

You could have a non-mission specific general background of multiple explosions going on to give the illusion that your area of combat is only part of a larger conflict. At that sort of range you couldn't pick out individual ships anyway

That sort of background could be used for any number of other missions, especially ones like the Battle of the Line and the Battle of Coriana 6.

Maybe have a bunch of planes in the distance (untargetable), timed to self destruct. Could have about a lot, but also need a lot of events....

On the old site, you had the Vorlon Planetkiller as a background object, because it was too big. Correct?

Well... they said that it will be a real model, it just will be used so far in the backround that the player can't really see it all that well.

As someone said "You can't have backround bitmaps shoot bigass lasers at planets"

As the team said, no mission specific background items period.

That includes VPKs, etc. My suggestion was for a generic background with explosions/gunfire but aldo_14's idea is interesting about having events for explosions
