Need a little Fred2 help

As many of your fans, I'm trying to learn to use Fred 2. And though I've studied the tutorial thoroughly several things don't seem to turn out quite as I'd like. I'm very early in the mission and all I'm trying to do right now is to move several ships (two EA Freighters, 2 Kestrel ASs, and 2 Crew Shuttles) from point A to point B and jump out through point B (which is a Jump Gate). I can get them to move through the waypoints (3 total, 1 for each class of ship) and jump out fine. My real problem is when it begins the ships usually ram each other, even though I've spread them a bit apart (about 20-25ms). They also seem to be out of position when they begin because they start turning into the direction of the waypoint, though I placed all ships facing their respective waypoints.

So I suppose my questions are a bit simple. At what distance should I place the ships from each other to simulate a convoy moving together and not having them crash into each other? I created 3 waypoints because I didn't want all of the ships one behind the other, currently there are two rows of three ships. Each row has 1 class of ship (ie the same type of ships are flying one after the other). Should I have them set in hyperspace or have the first row of ships "in front" of the back row ships in the ships editor?

That's about it. God help me when I try putting in the waves of Minbari and try to make the fleet battle I'm interested in making. Thanks.

Use common sense and experiment... Many things can be learned by trial and error, I did.
And convoy craft don't need to be 20 meters from each other... 50-100 meters is fine... It depends on the formation your ships are flying.
When it looks fine in your eyes, try it. See what goes wrong, fix it and try again...

A sort of beginner's mistake to make, and tiredness and probably a bit of ignorance on my part, but after you added the 2 other waypoints, you DID set the other class of ships to follow those instead yes?
