Volition: 3dfx Shutdowns, Sells to Nvidia

Posted by ivan:

Saw on Blue's that 3dfx has closed its doors and plans on selling all assets to Nvidia Corporation for a whopping 112 million including stock options as soon as its shareholders approve. I thought it was fake at first, but here's the real deal straight from the 3dfx site. Look down at the press releases for today. I know it doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with Volition or its games, but I think we can all agree that this is certainly news worthy.

Indeed, Ivan. Besides, it has got something to do with Volition's games. =P

Hey! Does this mean that there will be Glide drivers coming to nVidia cards? My TNT2 may just become competitive again if so, and I can only imagine how screaming fast a GeForce 2 Ultra would be in Glide.

This is good news, and this is bad news.

Good: GLIDE!

Bad: PRICES!

Yep.

No. nVidia didn't actually buyout 3dfx, but rather purchased all of their core assests. Which means they now own all of 3dfx's patents and pending technologies. It does not mean, however, that they own or have a responsibility to 3dfx's previous product lines. So basically you're not going to see nVidia made drivers for 3dfx as that is still 3dfx's responsibility, you're also not going to see anyone from 3dfx working at nVidia unless they apply in the conventional sense, and finally, you're probably not going to see Glide supported on any of nvidia's cards, past or present. Although, it would be cool.
