My norton is at a friends or some CRAP, and I havent installed it since I reformatted.

Yeah, its NIMDA, and I got it.....I updated to IE6.0 and it seems my explorer and outlook express are updated. But.....I think that only prevents you from getting it. How do I get RID of it!??!

Start looking for files riched20.dll (well nimda was in those kind of filed except windows/system has one and that's not the nimda) (tHe files are hidden of course). We'll it helped when I deleted those.

i had 1 like that called the CIH virus or the chernobyl virus it struck on the anniversary of the chernobyl incident.
Both my computers went down and i had to a complete reformat, i'm lucky it didn't take out the bios on those computers aswell.

I wouldn't be able to do anything to your bios- it should be hardcoded on your motherboard (well, the necessary version at least).

The Magistr.A virus is one that can wipe out BIOS's on the computer. My roommate had a relatively modern computer with a top of the line Asus motherboard, and apparently he got the virus, and now had to order a new BIOS chip.

Microsoft has a whole section on the NIMDA virus, and basically, they have said the best way to protect from it (if your an end user) is to either download a couple of specially made patches, or to get IE Browser version 6, and to download the latest security updates.

The page can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/topics/Nimda.asp

modern bioses are firmware - they can be updated and stuff - at least i think new ones are certainly my last computer had a firmware bios so a virus could just write a load of rubbish to where you biso info should be adn spluuuuuuts computer knackered until get a new bios - what i cant understand is that if i was writing a virus i would make it delete the antivirus software first thing the second it got up and running in a system - then mess with windows so you can install anything then proceed to erase all data - thankfully i dont think there are many that nasty out there cause if they were that a complete reformatting your going to need - add a mess with bios aswell and another complication - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh computers are vulnerable indeed to viruses to hackers and god only knows what - dont know what i would do without my puter if anyone here is a good hacker then they should try and hack the talibans computers - if they have any probally not since its a western thing but anyway if they do they should find out where bin laden is hiding
