First ones?

I have opened this thread to see what you people think about this. When I first thought of this I thougt it was pretty cool, but after thinking about it for some time I started to think it wasn't that cool. What I am talking about is that we, humans, might actually be a first-one. For decades (early 1900's) scientists and astromeners have scanned the sky looking for a planet could support life but the found none, the only evidence there is to support aliens is the reported sightings and accounts of abductions, which many are sceptic about and refuse to belive. The one piece of evidence that makes you think is when in the the 1970's (I think) a repated radio signal was recived from outerspace, the radoi signal also hade prime numbers, which no spacial bodie (stars,nebula,ect..) is capibal of making. Or also known as the 'WOW' signal(I belive thats what its called). So we might be a firstone, one of the oldest races, by the time we meet a race as advanced as the narn we might be as, or more advanced as the Walker of Sigme 957.

Tell me what you guys think.

Hi,

Also remember that actually detecting planets is very new. If you think about planets are so tiny it's nigh on impossible to find them. What we've actually been listening for is radio signals in a relatively quiet interstellar band but that sort of thing relies on someone else sending out a powerful signal, presumably with the intent of letting everybody know where they are. We certainly haven't sent out anything of that level of power. So the search for interstellar intelligence by that means is a long shot at best, it's just better than not looking at all.

Don't mess with me on this one, I'm in Astrophysics and sometimes I bother to read the noticeboard .

Bye,

Dave

And if there were alien races capable of space travel, would they even want to give their postion out so freely? We'll find other races one day, too bad i will have been dead for 50000 years.

How do you figure that? If that signal was sent from 10000 light years away, that race would be enormously more advanced that we are. They would have had the capability to send a radio signal 10000 years ago. Much more advanced than we are.

We've only been looking for planets, with any decent tools, for a very short time. Only in the very recent past have we actually found some planets. (late 1990's) I think the odds of us being the old race is slim, considering that almost all life on this planet was wiped out 160 million years ago. What if the more advanced life then was allowed to keep evolving rather than dying out?

What if other planets didn't have such catastrophic events happen to them? They evolved without having to start over again.

I almost take some solice knowing I won't see these Aliens, or very unlikely to. If we, humans, are any indication of what a very advanced race does to inferiorly developed races, it won't be pretty. They will be the European colonists, or conquerors of the 1400s and we will be the confused and overwhelmed Native Americans.

Hopefully they are nicer than us...

A good reason to ONLY listen to space, and not broadcast our damn location like some have done and want to keep doing with their beacons. (High powered signals sent out into space for the purpose of contact)

It would be nice to actually have the advantage of observing them first, as best we could. And hopefully they don't judge us based on our signals. Can you imagine the impression a race would get from the trash on our air waves? Or maybe that's why they haven't come around, we scare them away.

Sorry, hopefully I'm not rambling too much. =)

I heard nothing about that 'WOW signal'. Sounds pretty bogus to me since it doesn't appear in other UFO and ET research I've read. Probably one of those hoaxes...bouncing signals off the moon or an asteroid or something

Five years ago, we didn't know there were any other planets for sure except for the 9 in our solar system. Now we know of I think 30 planets. All in the gas giant category since we are unable to detect smaller Earth or Mars sized planets. By 2010 Nasa wants to launch some more satelite telescopes to look for Earth sized planets. Thats when things get interesting.

Theorists predict that in the next 100 years, we will know if we are alone in the universe. And as far as im concerned, its rediculous to even consider such a possibility that we are alone.

The 'WOW' signal is real, it was recived by a scientist at a radio listing post, BIG EAR, when that signal came he wrote 'WOW' in the margin.

Santiago if it is 10000 years old it would have been very distorted by backround radoisignals from quasars and whatnot, for all we know it could be a distress call, or it could be nothing cause the signal hasnt been repated for over 20 years.
I may have been wrong about the prime numbers but the signal was so strong that it catapulted the Big Ear's recording device off the chart.

Yep, there is a tiny piece of order even in the deepest chaos. Such as that signal. A tiny sign of order in a chaos of radiowaves. No more, no less I'd believe. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm only saying that it could have been a possibility which came true. Nice idea tho But just to mention: if that signal was sent by an intelligent lifeform, how can we be sure he/she/they was/were the First Ones? We can't take a call to the Pleiades, not even if Douglas Adams claims so And even if we'd ask, would they know the answer?

The figure of 10000 years wasn't to be taken literally.... come on now. (And not knowing the initial strength of the signal, you can't be sure how much signal degredation would occur.)

It was to show we have NO idea when that signal was sent since the location it was sent from was never discovered.

The signal just being 200 years old would make them wildly more advanced than we are now. The point still remains. That little piece of evidence doesn't offer in anyway when the signal was sent, and it's quite a leap to then assume we are somehow first ones.

Our star is not nearly as old as other stars, our planet had its life wiped out before... Odds are against us being the oldest race in the Universe or Galaxy imo.

----

As for all the planets being gas giants, that's not true. Some of the planets were rock planets. Just tremendously large.

I think we have detected 1 or 2 planets a little bit larger than earth, i definately know at least 1, the only way this can be done is with a powerful telescope and a object in front of the planet creating a gravitational lenseing effect.

Ok last i heard we have found around 30 planets, with the addition of roughly 2 new ones every month. We locate them by looking at the star they orbit and sense the wobble that the star has de to the planets gravity. We can also calculate the major basic elements that the planets consists of, but i cant remember how this is done though the light spectrum of something i believe. We can only detect gas giants currently.

Eventually with the launch of new telescopes we will be able to view the planets directly. This is when i will get a bit more excited about it. In the next 50 years we will probably be able to pick out mountain ranges in planets in different solar systems. By which time we will have located thousands of new worlds. We will be able to calcualte what there atmosphere consists of maybe even the planetary body itself.

All this is true

O and I predict we will go to Mars around 2050 and have a perminent colony there in around 100 years. A colony on the moon will be setup before then and the launch to mars will probably be made from there.

I saw a program the other day and it it suggested something I'd never thuoght of. It said the most lilely event is that we will terra form the whole of mars to becoming hospitable and that we will first transfer over to mars as our sun starts to go nova and the safety zone is moved further out. After which we will maybe colonise a moon like europa (at whcih time it would probably be more like a water world cos all its ice would have melted) before eventually having to leave the solar system for good as the sun fianlly reaches the last stages of its life.

if we haven't figured out a way to get out of the solar system by the time the sun stars to swell intoa red giant we never will - 5 or so billion years should be plenty of time to get out of the solar system if its possible if not then we die or pack ourself into asteroids and throw them sub light speeds out fo the solar system but i doubt it would be possible to get the entire human race with the pressent day population off the planet let alone what it will be once we have to evac earth, mars, europe , titan, and god only knows what other planets and moons. but why wory anyway not going to worry us - even if i could chose to not die - after 5 billion years does anyone think they wouldn't have commited suiacide??

Scientists know how to actually move planets, it's not that difficult but the calculations have to be exact, just find a large asteroid and attatch a few powerful rockets to it, change it's course and bring it near a planet and the planets orbit will change slightly. Over some time it will be able to change the planets orbit and push it out so when the sun expands earths orbit could be changed.

Interesting. Very good points have been made, however I'm gona throw a little bit of B5 into this ...

It was the belief of the "Shadows" that evolution comes through conflict - we are strengthened by our conflict (partially true). It was the belief of the Vorlons that evolution comes through discipline (probably true too).

So if the race who sent the signal was much more advanced then us and managed to survive without conflict, wouldn't it stand to reason given enough time to rebuild we would be more advanced, more powerful? Take the Narns and Centauri, for instance, they never achieved First One status, my guess is becasue all they did was fight. Humans kept a nice balance of discipline and conflict, The Great Burn of 2762 for instance.

Anyhow, its still "seems like an aweful waste of space" if we are alone in the universe (Jodi Foster - Contact)

And So It Begins...

All over again...
