I know how, and it's not as great as you'd expect 
Just make a nice, large, asteroid that's fully destructable and you can have some Descent-type fun it.
That's *much* better...

maybe,its just that beam cannons strafing along ground bases and launching cyclops bombs into heavy tanks is pretty appealing to me.

Nobody has managed to make a really good surface/planetary mission as of yet, although it's a mod project I would like to see worked on. And to help you feel like you're flying a starfighter over terrain and not a helium balloon, you may want to consider using my [url="http://sushicw.homestead.com/files/freespace/velocity.htm"]Velocity Mod.[/url]
Ok, enough of the shameless plugs, but seriously, a planetary surface mod/minicampaign would be very interesting and if done right, a lot of fun.

YES! VELOCITY! i've played that game and it is very good.combining ships and most main factors of fs2 and the velocity game engine,and you have the best space-ground sim ever!
it would be ESPECIALLY cool if you could travel out of planets' atmosphere to go fight in space.
