can i put my music in FRED missions?
hi all...
i must say i'm impressed at all the freespace stuff all over the web... i knew i loved this game, but i had no idea how popular it was...
i've been working on fred missions for a while, and just started getting into the root down modding, but there's something i've wanted to do for a while that i just can't figure out.
i'm an electronic musician, and i'd like to put some of my songs into my missions as background music. has anyone cracked the access to the soundtrack files for freespace 1? i have soundforge, so i can open or save pretty much any sound format nown to man, i just can't seem to figure out where the game draws its soundtrack from.
if anyone can help me out (or even just let me know if this is POSSIBLE), i'd REALLY appreciate it. i have a few tracks that would just sound fantastic with afterburners roaring over them
thanks!

yeah, it's a tbl file. just rename the wav files in the entry to yours and that'll be it

FS1 or FS2? The quality abilities vary between them. If you want to send me your files I can make sure they are compatible with either game.

okay, i'm retarded.
it's fs1.
so i've got the tbl list opened in the viewer thing, and i see all the music files, but don't i need to get my song into the data directory first? or can i just specify a different path where the song is and it'll go get it?
and one other thing... once i get my songs into the tbl list and run the game, is it going to interrupt the song if an event occurs? ex... say i've got my 6:30 long song playing at the start of the mission. then a shivan wing jumps in. does it automatically revert to fs fight music? and do i need to chop my songs up into minute-long loops, or can the game handle big .wav files?
i suck... thanks for taking the time, guys. i really appreciate it.

Only if you have a multi-channel sound card Snipes.
Anyways, a 6 minute long track is NOT good at all. You want to have a 3 min max battle sequence divided into 3 parts. Since FS music is event driven, you'll also need to setup pieces of music for jump ins and whatnot. Finally, the music for FS1 I believe is lower quality mono wav files and you'll need to do some conversion there.
Music files go into /data/music

good enough. i can convert to 8 bit mono no problem... thanks for the segmenting tips.
okay, maybe i'm just blind here... i'm in the data directory, and all i get is "missions", "voice" and a few fsview files.
is the music directory hidden here somwhere?
thanks again for the help, fellas.
scratching my head,

Now now... will both retards please return to their cells?
Dr. Dark and his daughter Cleavageachoo of the asylum walk forward
Ace... you need to return to your cell... you can't play "Mr. T. foo docta!" anymore...
With a pouty face, Ace walks away and then whines to Cleavageachoo's cleavage
...but Hannibal is in my cell foo... Hannibal!
Cleavageachoo pats Ace on the shoulder
Which Hannibal?
Dr. Dark shows a concerned expression
Hannibal Lector, he's still pissed that he wasn't on the A-Team, he wants a Mr. T. suit now...
Cleaveachoo has a smile on her face
I pitty dat foo...
