Music ...
Well, the HoTU version doesn't seem to include the music files... does anyone know of a way to reincorporate these files back into the game if I just downloaded them off of this site? I would be eternally grateful, I think music adds a lot to a game.

I think if you converted the .mp3 files to the proper .wav format settings and placed them in the data/music directory of the FreeSpace 2 folder it might work. The music.tbl should still be there to call upon the proper files to play ingame, so in theory it should work. If not, you're probably out of luck. Also, I was assuming the files you can download off this site or off the official FS2 site are in .mp3 format.
Microsoft ADPCM 22.050 kHz, 4 Bit, Stereo
Size of Format: 16
Format: PCM
Channels: 2
Samplerate: 22050
Bytes/Sec: 88200
Block Align: 4
Bits/Sample: 16
Channels: 2
Samplerate: 22050
If the music files you've downloaded off this site have "funny" names (i.e. FS2 Amb CO1.wav) then it means you probably don't have to rename them to get the game to recognize them. In that case, put the .wavs in the data/music folder and the game should play them.
If they have "proper" names (i.e. FS2 Revelations I, FS2 Exodus II, etc.) then you'll have to extract the music.tbl file from the root.vp file (found in the main FS2 folder) using VPVIEW32, which you can get off Descent Network (URL is out there somewhere). Open up the music.tbl using WordPad and find the names the .wav files are supposed to have and match them up with the track names (FS2 Amb B01.wav should go to the Exodus track, for instance). Once you've renamed all the .wav files so the game knows they're the ones to play, put the music.tbl in your data/tables directory and all of the .wavs in the data/music folder if you haven't already.
Big hassle either way.

Thanks, but... I've already got the music files from VW. Well, looks like it won't work. The music files in data/music are split into different parts, and the downloadable ones are the compiled versions of these files. Thanks anyways.

There's an idea...replace the music.
If you've got some CDs, then you can rip them and put them into FS2. I already inflicted Rammstein on Red Alert 2, so I'm not squeamish about tweaking music. There are some settings to change, like working out the number of samples in the wave files and sticking that in the tables, but you can probably work it out by multiplying the sound time by the bitrate and then substituting it into the tables with whatever it wants (eg. I think that the tables want it in the number of byte samples).
Sorry about the sidetrack. It needs the original music to seem right anyway. We can probably RAR and send you the music files, if the admins and any other authorities think that it is OK. I'm pretty sure that it's OK to send the music files that have been already MP3'd and stuck on the VW site, but again, we'll have to check.

Heh, I appreciate what you're doing, but you needn't bother. Though, if you posted it on the website, it would help future underdogs users. I myself just play my favorites playlist using winamp over the game. Sometimes when I'm in the mood, I'll turn on the FS2 sound track (i.e. all the songs on this site). I don't really feel like I'm missing anything... haha but if you could ZIP the cinematics I'd be eternally grateful lol.
P.S. I'm surprised there aren't any other underdogs users on this website.

I was wondering, where can I get the music from the FS2 Trailer? (The one included in the 1st FS1 CD) I've downloaded the whole soundtrack from Volition but they don't seem to have that pulse pounding music they played during the footage of the demo.

Download the trailer. Find some sort of program that can rip the audio out of a movie I guess. :-/. This isn't my field...
