Just reinstalled FS2 SOTY
After owning Freespace 2 SOTY edition for about 2 1/2 years (my old PC wouldn't run it fast enough in 1024x768), I finally reinstalled it a couple of days ago, and I can't believe how great this game looks and sounds. It's hard to believe that this game was released in 1999 for DirectX 6.0. So far, I've only played through the first three training missions, but even these were very well done. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the game.
At first, I was suffering from the fuzzy text problem that plagues GeForce4 owners, but I got that resolved using the D3DTextureOrigin fix. I also added D3DTextureDivider and D3DUseLargeTextures, but I haven't bothered to import the hi-res maps from FS1, and I don't think I will until I've finished the game for the first time with the original maps. Luckily, I haven't encountered the disabled afterburner problem that some have had on XP.
One question - I'm using a MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 which has eight buttons on it, but there are so many commands in FS2 that I'm not sure I'll be able to get by with the joystick buttons alone. But if I have one hand on the keyboard, I can't use the throttle control on the base of the joystick. Do you recommend using the joystick together with the keyboard, or can I somehow get by with just the joystick only?
Win XP Pro (all critical updates applied)
Athlon XP 2000+ (Palomino core)
Asus A7V333 motherboard
512 MB DDR333
GeForce4 Ti 4600 using the 52.16 drivers
Audigy (original, not 2)
MS Sidewinder FF2

Yes, but for the first time through, I want to play it the way Volition intended it to be. After that, I'll download FS2_open and try it out. In addition to the forum, is there a main page for FS2_open that will show all the new features and bug fixes, with before and after screenshots?

How do you know that's how they intended t to be? Maybe they wanted shine mapping and self illumination on the models, but were limited by the hardware available 5 years ago... Hmm? Ever think that?

Before and After is being worked on. There are some nice screenies, and a pretty complete manual, but both are down due to Gamespy killing the MySQL server, again.
And you can use the SCP without all the features on. You can make it look like normal FS if you want, or you can turn on all the gimmicks.

Ok, ok, for my first time through the game, I simply want to play it as it was released. After that, I'm sure I'll install the SCP.

Well, if Kazzam is a typo for Kazan, then yes...
