May we remember the Columbia

As international grief spreads and is expressed, let us take the time to remember the crew of the Columbia. Their devotion to their duty as pioneers and scientists will indeed by looked upon in the future to expand space technology. I make this note especially here because of the Freespace link to the exploration of space. May the crew of STS-107 rest in peace. February 1st, 2003 AD.

What better way to explore the beauty of God's creation than to go into space? Truly astronauts are some of the most blessed of all people. To die in an accident such as this is at the same time both tragic and heroic.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

--Psalms 19:1-4

Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one,
and calls them each by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.

--Isaiah 40:26

There is a bit of a difference - these guys died for the greater glory and understanding of mankind as a whole. They're heroes, and while I don't like the to think about all the other deaths, we must admit that this is a special case, and treat it as such.

They died in an accident... did anyone see Deep Impact? those people who sacrificed their lives in the end to destroy that asteroid? those people could be said to have died for makind. these people died in a freak accident.

i was not being sarcastic in my last post...

there is no difference dying in a space shuttle or dying fighting for your country... if anything dying in wars is worse, because the soldier in most cases didn't choose to fight in a dangerous war, but the staff of the Columbia realized it was a dangerous job and took the risk.

yeah, remember those 7 that died in Columbia, but also remember all the others that die daily for reasons out of their hands

i feel sorry for them and the rest of their families and friends, but i also feel sorry for other people that die daily for other reasons such as i mentioned above. don't ever forget those too. pray for those who died in Columbia if you wish, but don't forget at the same time to pray for those others.

[KT's view (the only right one may I add) ]

They died in the name of science. The explosion will be learned from and everything will go on. It's not like they didn't know they couldn't have died, and its not like they weren't willing to.

As was said on HLP, they strap themselves to the largest Rocket on the planet and aim for a space station hoever many hundreds of miles away.

An Accident was bound to happen sooner or later. Like I said, they knew it was a possibility and so did their family.

Dying, ironically, is a part of "life". Wether you beleive in form of god, or rule your own life, being afraid of death is comparable to being afraid of the dark, or even tommarow. Whether you go to hell, paradise, cosco, or to nothingness, it is only the next "level" and feeling sorry for dead people is a waste of time and selfish.

"wtf? Selfish?" Yes selfish. the only reason people feel sorrow for dead people is because they aren't here , with us. "he could have been a doctor or astronaut" yes he could have, but who's to say he's not going to come back and be an astronaut, or go to heaven and fly rockets, or become the next dalai lama or whatever?

For me, I have a hard time investing my time (which, again, ironically, eventually is devoted to otherpeople.. ) worring about how other people are dying. Hell, even know I am devoting most of my time to other people, via freespace campaigns, but somewhere along the line, some ****ed up gene or chemical makes me enjoy what I do. It's the serial murders and rapists, the "bad crowd" who don't aparently carry this, hence their activities against "the betterment of human kind"

Point in case, these people died doing what they loved most in life and felt they needed to donate to us.

Now if i were the kind of guy that regularly thought of these things, I would thank them for all their help instead of cry about it.

This accident isn't going over at all very well. My Math teacher was born in Nacagdoches county, and she knew many people living there. As for the student body, one of the astronaut's (One of the woman) has a nephew that goes to my school, Colton Clark. He's not really that much of my friend, but we're all like real nice to him.
