Help needed badly on Slaying Ravana
Well, I've had it. After cruising through the prior missions on Medium difficulty, I can't seem to survive Slaying Ravana. I can get the destroyer down to about 50%, but then I get creamed by flak cannons, missiles, anti-fighter beams, and Shivan fighters. I've played this missions over ten times with no success. Any tips?
lower the difficulty.

Prioritize the beam and Flak turrets. It's not your fault if the other capships around the place die, so you can afford to ignore some of the larger beams and concentrate on the stuff that can actually kill you. And switching between banks to up your refire rate is always useful.

Try and use your torps on the Ravanna's weapon subsystem. Not only do you deal damage to the destroyer itself but you'll severely compromise its ability to hit you with beam weapons, lasers, and flak guns.
Snipes had a fool-proof idea too. Hit F2 and select "Easy" or "Very Easy" or "Insane" as these difficulty levels will help you end the mission quickly.
Good one Slasher.
The most important things were said, think tactically and destroy weapons subsystem first, then go to main hull.
If you're not up to it, lower difficulty.
There's no better than gain experience and then begin from the start with higher difficulty. Or how you think FS2 aces got their experience?
Hmh.. I wonder how far I got in Insane difficulty. I have forgotten.
The first mission where Shivans appearad was tryly difficult in Insane, that I do remember.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try to hit the weapons subsystem first, but it's usually not in my line of sight on my initial run, so I suppose I'll have to adjust my angle of approach.
I did think about lowering the difficulty, but since most of the missions prior to this one have been pretty easy, I'll do that only as a last resort.
Yeah, I had a really tough time with that mission my first time through. The way I solved it was by hiding in the entrance to the fighterbay and moving around just enough to avoid direct fire from the fighters.
Later on, I had more experience and was able to dodge enemy fire better. FS2 bombing takes some getting used to; I wish this hadn't been the first bombing mission. One strategy is to take out the closest AAA beam turret first, then circle the Ravana, firing bombs until it goes down. The faster you can destroy it, the less damage you'll take. I usually take Cyclopses in all three banks.

Still play FS1? Check out my upcoming campaign, Fortunes of War.
Play FS2 instead? Check out my finished minicampaign, Deus Ex Machina. :D
I wish it wasn't the only bombing mission. (The only real one anyway.) Beams are making bombers obsolete.

"Snipes ...Is The Dark Continent."
I finally slew the Ravana without lowering the difficulty.
I eventually figured out that I was getting my ass handed to me because I was being too aggressive with the Ravana, so I immediately ordered my wing to attack the Ravana while I took care of the first two Basilisks. I took the first two out quickly, then made a beeline for the Ravana, targetting the beam subsystem. Then I took out a few nearby turrets and covered my wingmen until I ran out of hornets and had to retreat to the Kehnmu to rearm. After rearming, the Ravana was already down to 12%, so I only had time to make one more bombing run. When command notified me that the Ravana had been neutralized, I was very close to its hull, so I quickly jumped out before it blew. If I had hung around any longer, I probably would've been toasted by the shockwave. Stats gave me six kills (five Basilisks and one Manticore), so I suppose that's pretty good for flying a brick like the Boanerges.
good job, though you probly should have tryed getting more bombs on it, I always figured this mission was only there to give you a Ravana kill.
you seem new you should head over here and check out the SCP forum, also book mark that becase it's the center of the FS comunity and this site probly won't be around much longer

I may be new, but I do know about HLP and the SCP. Thanks for the info anyway.
I replayed this mission and got the Ravana kill. I didn't deliver the final blow, but I unloaded several bombs on it this time. My wingmen always die when I play this mission - is it possible to keep any of them alive?
yeah, order them to depart as soon as you get in mission.
