The Gathering

I'm not quite an avid follower of B5, but can anyone tell me where in the storyline the feature-length episode "The Gathering" takes place? It's the one where some guy poisons Kosh.
It seems that some of the actors and characters are different than to the ones in the other episodes I've seen.

The Gathering is the pilot of the series. And indeed, many actors were replaced because there was one year gap between the pilot and actual series.

Chronologically The Gathering happens some time before first episode of season 1.

And when put it simply, The Gathering sucks. The actual series and rest of the movies are much better.

The Gathering takes place a year after Babylon 5 came online and a year before "Midnight on the Firing Line", the first episode of season 1. There are many technical differences, and all of them are for the better. Also, some characters got replaced during that year. You'll see one of them later, same actor and character, and hear the doctor (Benjamin Kyle) mentioned in the first episode as his replacement arrives. It worked out decently, so it seems just like people just moved on to other things etc, and they don't feel like abrupt changes.

I also really, really, really hope you saw the "Special Edition" of The Gathering. The original version was quite horrible, with lazy editing resulting in a dragging feel and loss of many good scenes. The SE restored many good ones, made the pacing better and was re-scored by Christopher Franke, who composed all of the music for the series. The Gathering is quite weak but not that bad, after you watch it with the knowledge of what will come later...

We never did get an answer for how Kosh got poison on his hand when he never would have held his hand out to a human.

Maybe he trusted him enough to held his hand out! Kosh also called him Entil'Zha Valen!

More intrested I am on about what hand? Kosh and other Vorlons are spirit based, they don't have physical body, how in world he(or she, or what ever it is) got that poison and how it could affect? Oh well, I think that goes unanswered

JMS has stated somewhere that vorlon are not entirely energy based, they still have some sort of cyrstalline structure about them, and the poison only worked on silicon based lifeforms.

The Gathering is good for what it is....its a beginning and you don't always get it right in the first place. So its very enjoyable to see how it works...what they threw out, what they kept, what changed...

Have you ever seen the pilot of Star Trek: Next Generation?

THAT was a horrible pilot, but then the whole first season sucked (and even the rest is nowhere near B5).

Also the B5-Team used quite some new techniques for the show. And I'm quite sure, that for the pilot there wasn't must of a buchet.

And for the thing with Kosh.

Maybe he knew it, and let it happen as a test for Sinclair.
If yes, then was it just a lucky coincidence (from a Vorlons view) that Lyta scanned Kosh, or was that too intended.
Or maybe JMS got the idea, that the Vorlons are energy beings after the pilot .
Or maybe it was......
