How to make FS Models?

Im sure youve all heard this question probably a million times already, but I was hoping someone could tell me how to convert Truespace *.cob files into FS1 *.pof files??? Do any of the converters work for FS1?

Im just starting out trying to create 3d models to mod FS with. As long as I can connect normal 3d files to fs files I think Ill be set. Anyone know how all these other mods were done?

Posted by karajorma on 09-05-2003 10:17 PM:

OKay.

1) Why are you modding for FS1 instead of FS2?

2) I believe that FSMM can import FS2 pofs and save them as FS1 pofs but it's been so long since I last used it that I can't say for certain.

3) Everyone loves to see pictures of new mods especially from newbie modders

Haven't gotten that far yet with the pics. I'm starting to play around with Blender3D to see if I can create anything; even an asteroid would suffice. I do have one ship I created in Anim8or, but it's a little too simplistic and not quite a starfighter; no textures either.

I call it my Aerospace Fighter

This is my first somewhat successful attempt at creating a 3D model.

I hope to perhaps purchase a later version of Truespace or something; the other professional 3D Modelers seem way over my head and wallet. Are all modders professional 3D artists? I hardly have a clue how to make some of the things I've seen posted on the forums.

To answer your first question karajorma,

I really like FS1 and am dissapointed at the lack of attention it receives anymore in the wake of FS2. It seems like many regard 1 and a sort of beta that 2 cleaned up after. Maybe it is a little, but it's also the backbone for 2's storyline. You can't truly appreciate 2 if you haven't played 1; it sets the stage for the events that unfold in 2.

It's not good enough to learn about the Great War in the FS2 techroom, you have to actually fight in it in FS1. Not even the FS1-FS2 port has the cutscenes (i think) which reveal vital information about the underlying lessons that come from the invasion of the Shivans and so forth.

Anyways... actually I've just had a lot more experience w/FRED1 and FS1 in general to start modding there. I really want to help keep 1 alive by making some missions for it at least.

Don't get me wrong though, I love FS2 and acknowledge that the graphics and gameplay are "much better" than its predecessor, but it seems to have enough support right now with all the campaigns and SC Projects going on in the modding community.

TS3.2 is available for free (check my FAQ for details) and there are other programs like GMax that have all the power of the top quality professional modellers.
Then of course there are some who just use unscrupulous methods to get hold of programs like 3DS max etc.

Your best bet is to convert it to a FS2 POF using PCS, then use ModelView to save it as a FS1 POF.

Oh yes. Modelview does have that option tucked away in one of the menus. I had a vague inkling it could do that

Wow it does! Cool, thanks, that's what I needed to know.

Umm, one more Q karajorma.

In your FAQ under Commercial Modelling Programs:

"3DS Max The other expensive program commonly used in the community. [V] used 3DS Max for the ships you see in FS2 and several modders also use it."

How did [V] convert models made in 3DSMax to a POF file? The same way we do?

Posted by karajorma on 09-06-2003 09:37 PM:

No idea. I doubt they went through Truespace though. Most likely they have a similar converter for 3DS max files though why they never released it is something I don't know.

Not if you D/L the Terran Vasudan War Project at HLP

Also blender= way too many damn polygons for FS especialy 1

if its over 1,200 it will give u probs in FS2 i think. FS1 is probably lower and there is no FS1 open to help u out there.

Blender would almost never work in FS especialy because FS doesent use negative objects.

Modelview is the only way to make FS1 POFs. The POF conversion programs, like COB2POF were changed to be used for FreeSpace 2 after FS2 was released.

Crackerjack, I prefer FS1 over FS2 also. If you want to see one of the only 2 FS1 campaigns remaining, look here.

They used a special internal program called BSPGen to add the appropriate POF data somehow. You can read about it in the POf Compiler Info screen.

Wow thats great. I didn't realize there where still some FS1 projects in the works. I had a lots of great ideas for missions and a campaign put I haven't been puttin enough time into it at the moment.

Ironically I'm actually a bit apprehensive about modding Freespace1&2 because multiplayer will not work w/ mods on it. I remember someone said they installed it twice; one for mods and one for multi i guess. I'm not entirely sure about doing that, but...

I understand FS2 has a lot more going for it w/ the modding, and I'll probably get around to tinkering w/ FRED2 and the other stuff eventually. However for me FS1 was a whole new experience from the X-Wing and WC games.

I really liked those, but when I cranked up FS1 for the first time it just blew me away; what with the intro and the explosions! I was hooked after that. I played around with FRED a lot and mostly want to create a couple really cool missions.

I'm looking at the possiblilty of creating new ships and weapons because I've seen some posted on the forums. I have barely any experience with modeling and modding unfortunately.

That's overkill. With FS2 you only need to copy your Data folder before you install any mods. Then you can swap between multiplayer and modded version simply by renaming the Data folders.
The only other thing you have to watch out for is mods that install .vp files. If a mod does that you'll need to change the extension or move the .vp file out of the main folder (but not into Data).

Follow those rules and FS2 will work fine with mods. I'd imagine that FS1 also behaves somewhat similarly.
