planetkillers

this isnt a question about when you will release stuff, more like if you will....
are you going to make models for the vorlon and shadow planetkillers? considering that they're, well, fairly large?

Their size is currently... "unknown"!!!

No one can be 100% certain about it... so... there only one thing to do.

Ask the "Creator"!!!!!

If memory serves, this was asked a couple of years ago and IIRC the Freespace 2 engine can handle an object upto one quarter the estimated size of a Vorlon Planet Killer, nothing bigger.

Posted by Ghostavo on 07-09-2003 10:23 PM:

Are you sure about that?

I believe the Earth Atmosfere model in the TBP has 200Km in diameter... or is it something diferent?

Isn't a certain amount of polig. that count as the limit?

The engine doesn't care about size, only number of polygons. Some people have even mentioned making life sized models of planets for FS2

But the conversion programs do care. Make a complex object too big and the collision detection tends to stop working.

Ah. So you can make the Death Star for the Star Wars mod but not the VPK?

The problem, one of the problems, with the VPK (if i remember correctly) was that a gray triangle would be rendered across the hud for no apparent reason.

I see you picked up on my use of the word "complex". Well done. Credit your accout with five brownie points.

As for the Shadow PK: I think that is easier than the Vorlon one (as long as it isn't attacking a planat within a mission). Just make a mission within a black nebula and set some kind of sattelite (of coure hidden from sensors and far away) which fires the missiles. Of course that wouldn't be enaugh to recreate ACTA but it would be enaugh for the episode, in which the Firstones leave.

IIRC, the model was in test at one point but there were problems. I recall someone saying that it may be made into a static background for a mission, but that was a while back.

It all depends on the size of the planet killer really. For a VPK 50k diametre is too big for the engine really but 5k is eminently handleable. For the SPK I think that generally -Norbert-'s idea is good enough but for a ACTA type battle there may be problems creating a model large enough (would docking multiple subunits work?).

Triggy... you're a genius!!!!!

Instead of making the PK one object, how about making them multiple smaller objects docked?

That would make targeting kinda hard. And you'd have to script it so that if one gets destroyed they all blow at the same time.

Well, you could make it invisible to sensors... it's not like you can miss an object of that size!!!!!!

The hull percentage could be displayed in the escort thingy...

Distance is the only relevant thing in the sensors in this case... and imagine flying to an huge object an never know where to stop!!! That would be cool!!

I'm sure the scripting is worth the trouble of seeing that baby fire it's main cannon at an atm's!!!!
