Question Help Pls? Afterburners don't really work anymore?

Hi all,

After upgrading from a PIII-600Mhz to a P4 2.4c, FS2 flies in WinXP Pro (SP1a) However, I don't get the afterburners anymore. Its always TAB, and now when I press it, I hear the initial sound of the engines engage, but not the following rumble or the increase in speed - instead, my throttle just goes to maximum. When I let go, I hear the disengage sound, and the throttle goes back to whatever it was at. But still no afterburner - whats wrong - everything else works. Should I reinstall the game? Has anyone had this problem? Is it some type/speed keyboard setting in my bios (since I upgraded motherboard as well)?

Thanks,
William

I have this prob with the regular fs2.exe. I have PIV 1.8GHz, Intel some number (don't know which) motherboard, 1024megs RAM.

When I run the SCP .exe, everything works fine. Try that.

What is the SCP.exe? Where do I find it? I don't see it in the Freespace2 directory?

SCP= Source Code Project

It's a custom .exe that makes some changes to the original FS2.exe. Somebody has a link to the latest build in their sig. I forget who though.

I've kind of left FS2 for a year or two - just getting back into it now since I have a bit of free time on my hands. It seems a lot of my old sites are down - are there any more new developments to this great game? Can anyone recommend me to any sites or add-ons or improvements to FS2? Or point me in the direction of this SCP.exe?

Blue Lion has this same problem.. forgot why. Too bad HLP is down, I'd point you there.

The SCP website can be found here

This is a rather strange problem. The wierd thing is that I'd never heard of this problem under XP the entire time I've been in the community and now suddenly I've seen 3 cases in the last month.

The cure was apparently to run FS2 in compatability mode.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions, but my afterburner problem still persists. I have tried running FS2.exe in compatibility mode for Win98/ME, but no joy. I downloaded something called latestrelease.exe at the site SCP website, and it says its the FS2 opensource v3.5 - but still no joy. Whenever I hit the afterburners, I get the engine engage sound, but no rumble and the throttle just goes to full, no afterburners. Its pretty hard to play this without that extra push. Please any more suggestions?

I am running a ASUS P4P800 (i865PE) with P4 2.4c HT(disabled) and 2x 512Mb DDR400 dual channel running WinXP Pro (SP1a). My current video is an ATI Radeon9000Pro running Cat3.4 drivers on DX9.0a.

Thanks,
William

OOOPs, sorry typed too quick. I tried it again on the compatibility mode - this time with Win95 - and it worked. I've got my afterburners back -wierd. I played it fine in WinXP before with no compatibility mode whatsoever before my upgrade. So what is the advantage to using the opensource version over the FS2 version?

Thanks,

It's a big list.

Cloaking, glowmapped textures and glowpoints, projectile and beam weapons for fighters, new SEXPs for FRED, nameplates on ships, lots of fixed bugs to name just a few.

The only disadvantages are that the standard FS2 movies won't work (although new ones will) and that you can't play multiplayer on PXO with it.

I have noticed that all three cases of this problem was from people who had just upgraded (and I think using a new copy of XP). I suspect this is something we'll see more often.

BTW wm_cheng do us a favour and while playing see if you can change the energy allocation of your fighter (The insert, delete etc keys).
Don't be surprised if you can't get that to work, the other two who reported this problem couldn't get that to work either, even when they solved the afterburner problem.

Thanks for all the help.

I nice that FS2 is still alive and well out there!

I did try it, I also have to put the launcher (FreeSpace2.exe) in compatibility mode (Win95) to get everything to work not just FS2.exe.

I played it some more, and I so far everything works (cross my fingers...) The energy transfers seem to work along with the afterburners.

I'll play some more tonight...

Thanks,
William

They put cloaking in? Is there a thread here or at HLP that gives some more detail?

Posted by GalacticEmperor on 07-07-2003 11:14 PM:

Last I heard before the boards went down is that decloaking hadn't been enabled yet. It also doesn't work (yet) in OpenGL. But the WIP shots were bloody awesome, and whoever was working on it was trying to fix it.

I may have seen a screen shot of it.....Does is give the ship a transparent texture that distorts the image of the ship? Or am I thinking of somthing else?

EDIT: Oh yeah, HLP is back up for those who didn't know.

It's not working fully yet but I have faith in Phreak's ability to get it to work
