[Question] Mission Design - Directives

Hiho,

i am having some small difficulty with directives.

I want a directive to shop up when a certain event happens.

Ship A arrives, directive "Destroy ship A" appears on your hud.

SEXP looks like this :

when -> has arrived delay -> ship a ,0
-> validate goal -> destroy ship a

If i enter the directive with this event , it shows up at the beginning of the mission, wich would spoil the surprise

Someone explain how to do this

Cheers,

Wyatt

hmmmm. Confusing. You say you want to have directives work yet you use the validate goal SEXP which relates to objectives. What are you after?

Objectives (Appear at the end of the mission briefing and usually play a tune when completed)

Directives (Appear in mission in a box on the middle left of the display).

EDIT. On re-reading your post I'm guessing you want to make a directive appear on the HUD after the ship appears in the game (and not before that).
I know that FS2 automatically takes care of some directives (eg. destroy <Wingname> doesn't show up until that wing appears.)

If FS2 isn't taking care of it automatically you handle it by using two events. The first one triggers when the ship appears. You then chain the second event to the first one.

Correct.

Oddly enough the directive shows up BEFORE the ship is even there wich kinda ruins the surpise.

Two events:

Event Name
-when
--has-arrived-delay
---ship a
---0
-valide-goal
--destroy ship a

Event two (chained)
-when
--true
-is-ship-destroyed-delay
--ship a
--0

And then you write directives on chained event and tadaa!

Here is a rough example how directives work. (I think they work like this)

Event1: arrival of some ship for example...
Event2: destruction of the ship... This one has the directive text "Kill evil ship".

The events are chained. So when event1 happens the event2 "activates", thus making the directive text "Kill evil shp" to appear on hud.
After the ship is destroyed, thus making the event2 complete, the system also assumes the directive connected to it is complete.

The validate-goal event makes mission goals to appear in the mission goals screen accessable trought the F4 key. Nothing to do with directives...

Edit: I see Rose was a bit faster... But I did it better!
