Exclamation THIS THREAD WILL BE KEPT UP-TO-DATE TO PROVIDE LATEST INFORMATION

Announcements 06-20-2004:

I think I should bring you some news. We're trying to bring The Babylon Project back on it's own feet.
What I have seen in the last 48 hours looks promising. But it is not the first 48 hours that decides what comes out of this storm. No, it is the next few months.

R2.1 or R2 patch is still work in progress. I think you will see some very radical changes when we finally release R3. Howewer, we need continued support and motivation from the community to make R3 happen.

In the very near future, we will be asking your help. I hope we can find enough motivated people to help this project survive another year or two.

Announcements 02-02-2004:

Perhaps about time to say something. We're not dead, yet. The R2 patch is still in the works.

We're still missing two missions for the patch, as soon as the missions are done, the patch will receive final testing and released. We don't know when, it will be done when it's done! Slasher's busy with real life, mainly school so don't push him.

Also, apparently it looks like you will receive more eyecandy in the next release. As IPAndrews seems to have taken interest in [URL=http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fsscp/]SCP[/URL] goodies for TBP made by others than the team members...

Plus a few changes in this thread here and there, nothing major.

Announcements 10-12-2003:

To prepare for upcoming v2.1 R2 patch release, we have re-released speech vp-file patch because 2.1 core patch will not have speech patch included.

Since the "workaround" is quietly becoming obsolete, I have moved it to be the very last thing in [URL=http://www.volitionwatch.com/vwbb/showthread.php?s=&postid=108324#post101216]Release 2 post[/URL]. For all you newcomers: The "workaround" allows you to skip all the troublesome campaign missions which may be too difficult to pass because of several major bugs.

So, until the official core patch has been released, install the "workaround" to skip the first mission.

Arrow RELEASE 2 INFORMATION:

What to download?

You should either download the Full version or Core version only. Full is recommended but Core includes everything you need to play R2. In other words, Core is the minimum install.

What about R1.1 --> R2.0 patch?

It is not recommended to download R1.1 > R2.0 patch, this patch may not install, even if you have fully working R1.x install files. At the moment the patch is only available at Kazan's site. Due to the fact that there is a high probability it won't work, it is not supported.

With Release 2, we moved to vp-files, which works much like a ZIP-archive. If there are any files under data folder, it overrides the ones included in a vp file. This means that the patch needs to convert Release 1 files to vp files, otherwise R2 wouldn't work because R1 files are overriding R2 vp's. There is too high probability that the patch cannot do it's job properly.

How to install:

If you have Freespace 2 already installed:

Remove any mods installed, including The Babylon Project Release 1. If you're not sure what to do:

- Uninstall Freespace 2.
- Remove Freespace 2 folder (default: C:\Games\Freespace 2).
- Install Freespace 2 and install latest official Freespace 2 patch. [URL=http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/downloads.php](Download Freespace 2 patch)[/URL]
- Install The Babylon Project Release 2 to the folder you installed Freespace 2 (default: C:\Games\Freespace 2).
- Install released The Babylon Project patches.
- Launch FS2.
- Select a campaign which works with TBP R2. (Note: Main FS2 campaign is selected by default.)
- Play.

If you don't have Freespace 2 installed:

- Install Freespace 2 and install latest official Freespace 2 patch. [URL=http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/downloads.php](Download Freespace 2 patch)[/URL]
- Install The Babylon Project Release 2 to the folder you installed Freespace 2 (default: C:\Games\Freespace 2).
- Install released The Babylon Project patches.
- Launch FS2.
- Select a campaign which works with TBP R2. (Note: Main FS2 campaign is selected by default.)
- Play.

Remember to create a new pilot for R2.

Following files are included in Full download, but are also available as seperate downloads:
- Core (required): [URL=http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/alliance/TBP-Core-2_0.exe?download]Mirror 1[/URL], [URL=http://www.3ddownloads.com/volitionwatch/babylon/TBP-Core-2_0.exe]Mirror 2[/URL]
- Music (optional): [URL=http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/alliance/TBP-Music-2_0.exe?download]Mirror 1[/URL], [URL=http://www.3ddownloads.com/volitionwatch/babylon/TBP-Music-2_0.exe]Mirror 2[/URL]

I downloaded a Release 2 file but it does not work! Why?

Most likely your download has been corrupted, try downloading again from another source.
There's a way to check whether your download is corrupted or if the problem lies somewhere else:

Note: R2 installer is able to check it's own integrity when you launch it. So if installer is able to launch and integrity check passes, there's no need to do the md5 test.

- [URL=http://koti.mbnet.fi/fury/tbp/md5.exe]Download md5.exe[/URL]
- Copy md5.exe to same folder where you downloaded Release 2 file.
- Open command prompt (Start > Run and type cmd or command)
- Move to the directory where md5.exe and R2 file are. (for example: cd C:\Downloads)
- Type md5 filename (filename of the file you have problems with, for example: md5 TBP-Full-2_0.exe)
- This prints md5 checksum, see if it matches to checksum below:

code:

EAA13B30A2AD43E812D19ED13492F09D TBP-Full-2_0.exe
0E7297EF3CFAF1389FF99ACADFEB3780 TBP-Core-2_0.exe
BCAD06741B00C9E56A42036789913D29 TBP-Music-2_0.exe
1B883325711CD7462607C6EA6C14F549 TBP-Anims-2_0.exe
26622B551091878FB9CAD0FFCF892F39 TBP-Speech-1_1-to-1_1_1.exe

- If it does not match, then your download is definitely corrupted.

A word about patches:

You don't need to download Full, Core or any of the optional downloads again when we release patches. There may be multiple different patches listed, it is recommended to install all listed patches in listed order (most likely from oldest to newest). When a patch that replaces an older patch completely is released, the obsolote patch will be removed from the list.

Installation order:
- The Babylon Project Release 2
- Speech 1.1 to 1.1.1 patch
- Core 2.1 patch (not released yet)

Release 2 Speech patch:

This patch fixes the wrong paths in speech vp-file, which cause speech not to work in some missions. Download this patch to correct this issue.
[URL=http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/alliance/TBP-Speech-1_1-to-1_1_1.exe?download]Mirror 1[/URL]
[URL=http://koti.mbnet.fi/fury/tbp/release2/TBP-Speech-1_1-to-1_1_1.exe]Mirror 2[/URL]

Note: Upcoming 2.1 patch does not contain the speech patch, you need to download and install both.

Release 2 core patch (v2.1):

All but two missions done. Slasher's busy so it might take time to get the missions done.

"Workaround" installation procedure:

This "workaround" will replace existing b5-missions-2_0.vp in your Freespace 2 folder.

- [URL=http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fury/tbp/r2-workaround/b5-missions-2_0.exe]Download workaround.[/URL]
- Go to your Freespace 2 directory.
- Create a new directory and name it "vp backup".
- Move or copy b5-missions-2_0.vp to "vp backup" directory.
- Install the workaround.

Backup is not necessary. If you just want to get on with it, then download the workaround and install it. That's it.

The only change in this workaround is that campaign file has been deleted, all campaign missions are now accessible through mission simulator.

As it can be hard to figure out which missions belongs to the campaign after you have applied the workaround, here's a list:
1. Soldiers of Darkness (b5-sl-sp-04.fs2)
2. Battle of Jericho 3 (b5-fu-sp-01.fs2)
3. Deliveries in Twilight Zone (b5-fu-sp-02.fs2)
4. Staring into the Abyss (b5-sl-sp-05.fs2)

Question RELEASE 2 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

I am receiving an error message that looks like this:

Error: Invalid weapon name. In sexpression: ( when
( true )
( good-secondary-time
"Friendly"
100
"Cyclops"
"Belisarius"
)
)
(Error appears to be: Cyclops)
File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\Mission\MissionPa
rse.cpp
Line: 3552

You need to go into the Campaign Screen and change your campaign to The Babylon Project Supported campaigns. FreeSpace 2's main campaign will not work with The Babylon Project installed.

I can't complete Mists of Fire - Mission 1! Why?
There are several bugs in the released missions, especially in this one. Download latest patch to correct these issues. (To avoid further confusion: the patch is not released yet, use the workaround to skip the mission for now.)

Where are the tables or other TBP files?
All files are now in .vp files, which works like a zip archive. You need [URL=http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fury/fs2-tools/descent_manager/]Descent Manager tools[/URL] to open and extract vp files.

Why there is no speech in missions?
Some missions are missing voices because there is a path error in speech vp file. Generic messages are not affected. Rest of the missions will have their speech added later. A patch has been released to corrrect this issue.

Why is Aurora Starfury pulse gun effect different?
Old effect based on Season 1-2 effect, this new one bases on Season 3 effect. Personally I like the new effect, but unfortunately we can't please every single person.

What is wrong with the Drakh Raider?
The Drakh Raider, much like the WhiteStar, requires a new AI type that ensures that the vessel manuvers in a proper attack pattern as well as having many attributes of a capital ship as well as a fighter. Until the source code changes can be made, this ship will not work as effectively without a very extensive level of scripting in the mission.

Where is the Earth-Minbari War campaign?
It will be back when it is rebalanced for R2.

About backgrounds.
Although an old background package was supplied with R2 (will be corrected in upcoming patch), there shouldn't be any serious problems with backgrounds. Howewer we have received a few reports that grey nebulas are causing slowdowns, this seems to be related to ATI display adapters. If you have any further information on background issues, please let us know.

Why do ships like the Omega and Vorchan have trouble hitting targets with their guns?
Until source code additions make volley fire weapons like those included on both of those ships, neither vessel will work exactly as intended. This is a known problem that we have solved as best we can for the time being. Source Code changes will fix the problems in the future but until then they will be vulnerable to fighter attack.

When will you use Source Code for The Babylon Project?
We've been analysing the best way to include the source code into our project. There is no direct consensus or path yet taken, but it is expected that Release 2.1 or 2.2 will require either the SCP Source Code EXE to run or our own version specifically for TBP. In either case, at that time we will add various improvements to the experience to make it more like Babylon 5. This includes: fighter beams, volley fire weapons, various mission end types, and more accurate jump effects.

Why do some ships not have debris?
Some of our older ships have not yet been reconverted with debris. This will be added at a later date.

When ships have more than one engine, why do the thrusters not go out when the engine is destroyed?
A FreeSpace 2 engine limitation that exists in retail FreeSpace 2. There is currently nothing we can do about it although it is expected that source code changes could ?fix? this minor error.

Why there are Drazi Sunhawk model and textures but it cannot be used (no table entry)?
Drazi Sunhawk is not supposed to be usable in R2 yet. It requires Gunship AI and source code modifications to make it's main weapons practical to use. Drazi fighter is not done yet.

Why there is Warlock model but it cannot be used (no table entry)?
Shouldn't have been in R2 yet. Not textured.

Where is Babylon 5? Whats this I hear about Babylon 4?
Both Babylon 5 and Babylon 4 are in the works. Some images of B4 can be seen in our screen shot section and other images of Babylon 5 have appeared on our message boards before. These will eventually be completed but only after extensive testing.
