Jumpgating

Will it be possible to create a single jumpgate model, istead of many "components"? In FRED I simply cant create very nice looking gates, with four separate components

4 arms would quite give FS2 engine some head problems ..each arm is at 1000-1200 p...byt doing this separate arm thing..we actually assume that due to the size of the arms you won't see them at LOD0 only from close to one arm and in the same time the other3 arms will be at a lower LOD showing. If it was a single gate object when you will be close to it you will see all arms at LOD0 details witch means 4000p in any case.

We think that this current scheme is more eficcient than the single gate object. The drawback is thet u need accurate positioning in FRED , but that can be done.

What I suggest is for you to start you mission having as template one of the R1 mission in witch the Gate is already placed.

Use a combination of the rotational constraint buttons (X,Y,Z) and the rotate tool to rotate your jump gate arms into position. It's easier to align the arm one axis at a time.

I place the jumpgates with a bit of co-ordinates help (which I almost never use besides this). Typically...I zoom to a certain distance...place the four bits. Make sure the two are virtually ontop of each other...go to another view and separate them apart. Its not a super easy thing, but it only takes me about 30 seconds....and once its done, moving it to another angle is virtually impossible...but I can live with it

Yet another situation where object editor works wonders....

Doubtful.

Unless its a straight performance optomization...which is possible. Something that would make 4000 polys seem less imposing.

I dunno.. it would be nice if it were possible to have the jumpgates set as a "group" object, or something in Fred, so they can be moved around and rotated as a unit, but are handled in the engine in the same way.

If you're looking to have your jumpgates at an angle, this might help.

First, place your jumpgates on the grid the way you normally would but DO NOT rotate them on any axis except the y-axis. You want to spin all the jumpgate arms on the y-axis first so that their arrangement stays exactly the same. Once you've got them at the angle you want you can then rotate them so they look like they do in the show (so the blue sides of the solar panels face each other). This way you can avoid the haphazard "jumgate-made-by-dyslexic-4-year-old" look.

No skill involved, jut a few extra seconds of your time.

Did anyone have trouble understanding that? Would a picture help?

Pictures always help.

Jumpgating is a career now

Now that I've done this I never expect to see a crappy jumpgate again.

I followed these instructions step by step but my jump gates end up looking a mess. Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Geez, it was to give you guys some perspective on the size of the jumpgate.

And it looks cool.
