FS1 Stars

whenever i stop turning or banking, my stars dissapear!! how do i fix this?

Posted by karajorma on 04-12-2003 11:48 AM:

I seem to remember hearing this one before. It's an anti-aliasing error. When you are still the stars are 1 pixel dots on your screen. Since everything around them is black the anti-aliasing routines make them black too.
When you turn the stars are drawn as lines so the anti-aliasing routines are more tolerant towards them.

I don`t remember the exact solution but now that you know what's causing it fiddling around with the AA options (either in FS1 or directly for your card) will probably be the right way to go.

hack into your registry. Put the D3DTextureDivider line and set value to 1...

I'll show you in a minute...

Posted by |Shadower| on 04-12-2003 09:13 PM:

ok thx so much, but i've not really hacked anything on my comp before, cause i didnt want to bug it up even more than it is, but for freespace, i gotta

D3DTextureDivider did nothing about the stars disappearing when i don't move

well, i tried hacking the registry and putting in 'D3DTextureDivider' and setting the value for '1' and it did **** all.

That's cause that's the hi-res texture hack not the stars dissappearing hack

I suspect that the solution is in turning on one of the anti-aliasing options from the launcher but since I`ve never noticed this problem I can`t say which one.

Check this thread for complete instrunctions:

http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=482&highlight=registry+hacks

As far as I know, it also remedied the skippish playback during FMV sequences.

Posted by JamieK on 04-21-2003 06:37 AM:

well, erm, that hasn't helped the stars disappearing.

Posted by Fry Day on 04-24-2003 08:56 AM:

It's as simple as this - You run with anti-aliasing, therefore, the stars disappear.

So, you saying that even though my settings say 'Anti-Aliasing turned off' means i am still using it???

hmmm, i did not know that.

Posted by Fry Day on 04-28-2003 05:45 PM:

Chances are, yes it is. It might be enabled in driver-level, which overrides the Anti-Aliasing settings of applications. The only way to solve the problem would be for the source-code fellas to implement masked multisampling (Which DirectX supports since version 8), so as not to anti-alias the interface and stars.

Edit: I didn't mean you'll have to use anti-aliasing for the rest of your days, only proposed a solution for making it work with anti-aliasing. To be sure anti aliasing is off, go to control panel\display properties\advanced and check in there. It should be somewhere in the tab with the name of your graphics card.

Well, using FSAA and Aniso with an Nvidia is rather stupid.

thats why i am going to be getting a Radeon 9500Pro, then on goes the FSAA and aniso.

Posted by Crackerjack on 07-10-2003 06:40 PM:

Um... i don't think you need to mess with the video card at all. You should be able to turn back on the antialiasing settings to what they were before.

If you haven't attempted the Registry Hacks, or don't know how to, look at that link to the HLP thread with screenshots on how to edit it.

I had the very same problem. Create the DWORD D3DLineOffset and edit its value to 1. That should fix the problem, it worked for me.

D3DLineOffset DWORD
Changes the coordinates used to draw a 1-pixel long line.
- 0: one way
- 1: some other way
- else: autodetect at startup (default)

Instructions:
1.Start>Run>type in 'regedit' (no quotes)
2.In the program, go to the following directory-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Volition/Freespace
3.Create the new DWORD by going under Edit>New>DWORD
4.Edit its value to 1

Hope this helps.

Speaking of anti-aliasing and texture filters, we could be able to do 800x600 or 960x720 res (scale the 640x480 art up) or resolutions over 1024x768 (scale the 1024x768 art up).

Give it up Woolie. The SCP aren't biting.
