No. Etymology does not determine meaning. Click the siggy.

However, the etymology is the primary contributing factor in why sesquipedalian is my favorite word. The story goes like this: Horace, in his Ars Poetica, advised aspiring young Latin poets against using sesquipedalia verba, words a foot and a half long. He was, of course, being deliciously ironic in so doing. English speakers who appreciated the jest brought the word sesquipedalian into our tongue and assigned it the meaning it bears in honour of that bit of humour.
