Colossus Plan?

You know,Ive always wondered about the colossus not jumping out when the Satanas entered the system.

They had clear orders, and thier destruction was blindly obvious, so why didnt the captian jump?

I remember that just before it got destroyed the captain said he had a plan. I wonder what the heck kinda plan he had that he wouldnt save the most important ship in GTVA history? Any guesses there?(or has this been discussed already?, the world may never know..)

Colossus did remain on its post to slow down Shivans, in that case that Sathanas would have moved to intercept Bastion which was running to the jump node.

They simply were buying time for the Bastion.

There might be something more bigger behind that, but thats the reason what FS2 is implying.

Actually if you look closely you`ll notice that the Colossus was actually disabled at the time. It couldn`t have jumped out if it wanted to.

The Captain mearly figured that he'd rather have his last words be "We'll hold them here" or something noble like that rather than "We're going to die! I want my mummy!"

Yeah, but wasnt the collosus disabled when it jumped in?

And another question, why was the colossus 14 clicks away, when any ship that entered through the node wouldve got torn up way before then, leaves us and the colossus vunerable it seems....

Because your fighter wing was a tactical unit designed to harass the Shivans at the node. The Colossus was there to get the Shivans attention by standing away from the node and looking imposing. From what we can tell, by the time you've arrived, its already taken damage to the fighter bay and no doubt has already engaged some Shivan vessels either at the node or where it is now. It did not jump in during the mission, it was already there from the start and its implied that its already been fighting.

I bet the GTVA was not anticipating the Shivans to ratch up the heat so quickly...from a heavy destroyer to a full out juggernaught in a matter of two minutes.

Sounds reasonable.

I do remember noticing the disabled status of the Collossus almost the moment the mission began. I thougth at the time that it was simply a way to keep it stationary throughout the course of the mission, but there are sexps for that sort of thing. I've never understood why it was disabled...

I think they put it so far away from the action so that you have no chance at all of saving it. If you were sitting right next to it in a heavily armed bomber you might have been able to knock out enough beam turrets to save the ship. Like a lot of things that would have been scenario breaking, the game required to Collosus to die there and then.

What I always thought to be odd about the Colossus is if you've destroyed all of the first Sathanas's forward beam turrets. Command is ordering the Colossus to fire with more power even though the Sathanas can't fire back so there's no hurry. Even stranger is that in one of the following briefings it mentions the Colossus needed to be repaired even though it never takes a scratch.

Personally I thought the Colossus would have been better replaced by those Mjollnir beam platforms in it's last mission.

Perhaps the ship was named by the GTVA for the size and grandeur of the explosion it'd make when it was killed by a Sathanas juggernaut after a few cheap shots.

Perhaps it was named for the amount of incongruity there'd be when it didn't launch its 150 fighter wings during a key engagement.

Perhaps it was named after the level of absurdity that there would one day be surrounding its eventual fate.

Perhaps Emperor Khon'su named it for the size of the mistake of making it in the first place.

COLOSSUS!

Of course, all of those beg the question of "why make it in the first place?"

To kill lucifer class superdestroyers. Considering that one of those could take out an orion in a couple of shots it was a good idea to build something that could take on a lucifer and win.
It's not Khon'su's fault that the shivans had bigger craft than the Lucifer. Nor is it his fault that GTVA command didn`t have the faintest clue what to do with the Colossus once it was built.

With only the knowledge they had at the end of FS1 the Colossus was a good idea.

The Colossus' attack on the first Sathanas plays best if you destroy two of it's cannons. The subsequent missions are designed for that outcome.

At least that's what the design diary on the FS2 homepage says.
