-- Fuzzy text in FS with a Radeon 8500. (http://volitionwatch.papageorgefamily/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=8431)

Posted by Mr. Perfect on 03-05-2003 05:20 AM:

Angry Fuzzy text in FS with a Radeon 8500.

I tried playing FS2 for the first time since I got my Radeon 8500, and the text, and a few menu graphics, are fuzzy. I've had this with other Direct 3D games, but using the driver's Direct 3D default settings has taken care of all the others. I'm running DX9 on Windows 2K SP2, and I've tried both Catalyst 2.51 and 3.1. I've tried tweaking AA and AF, but ti hasn't helped either...

Has anyone else had these problems? Anyone know of a fix?

I assume you're updated your drivers, and patched to 1.20?

Try it with FS2_Open. If it's still fuzzy, we'll get you to submit something to BugZilla.

Yep, patched to 1.2 and updated to the latest Catalyst drivers. I'll look FS2 Open in the morning and see how that works.

try running fs2_open with the -GF4FIX commandline. This seems to be some sort of texture problem, and might be solved by the same fix.

Er, I can't seem to find FS2 Open. Using "Freespace Open" in google just results in a lot of fanfiction, where some capital ship is constantly "opening fire".

Just a little note, though.
For FS2 Open to work correctly, you need to create a new pilot.

Unhappy

Thanks for the link, but FS2 Open had the same problem.

Here are a few screenshots of what I'm seeing(640x480 mode). Mission Briefing and Options Menu. Notice how the graphics aren't affected?

Don't know how to use the command line though.

Re-installed and tried 1028x768(I hadn't bothered to install the 1028 stuff the first time) and got the same garbled text.

I see where to put comandlines for the regular exe, but not the FS2 Open one. Where would they go?

BTW, should there be fonts in the /data/fonts folder? Mine is empty.

Turn off FSAA and that should clear the problem up. FreeSpace 2 anti-aliases the text as well as the 3d graphics...for whatever reason.

IceFire, it might be a texel origin problem (I've seen those with my older nVidia card in some games, namely Battlezone 2)

Mr. Perfect,
create a shortcut to fs_open.exe
right click on it, and choose 'Properties'

choose the 'shortcut' tab, and look at 'Target'
Which should read something like "D:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open.exe"

Add the command-line in the end, outside the double-quotes (so, for me, the 'Target' line reads:
' "D:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open.exe" -GF4FIX ' without the single-quotes).
