Freespace 2 keeps crashing

Whenever I run freespace, it keeps crashing on me, sometimes even in the menu, or during the briefing. I can't even complete the training without it crashing. It just stops, except for the sound. The speech continues till the part that's being played is done. But for the rest, everything just freezes and I have to close it with the task manager. I already tried reïnstalling and playing with or without the patch, different resolutions, without sound... I really don't know what to do :|

my specs:
Athlon 1,33 Ghz
MSI K7T-Turbo
512 MB Ram
Geforce2 GTS 32MB
WinXP SP1

Does crashing only occur in FreeSpace or with other games as well?

Is this FreeSpace in question FS 1 or FS 2?

...you're doing that on purpose, aren't you? Well, I'll repeat myself just to be sure. It's just freespace 2. Everything else works fine.

Personal note 1243A-B:
Never post messages until you have taken your caffeine dose.

Sorry pal.

So. You have tried pretty much all good troubleshootings yourself. Patches and so on.

Because other games are working fine, it's little harder to track down the problem.

Have you updated your video card and sound card drivers lately?
Since you've got GF2 GTS, nvidia.com is the best place to get official drivers.

Edit: Two mugs of coffee, that should do it...

Did some research, not much crashing problems posted here or at Hard Light Productions. Couldn't find anything useful.

Best bet is to install latest drivers to all hardware.

I don't believe it's infamous "Infinite loop" either, because you are able to close the game by taskmanager. Infinite loop most likely causes blue screen crash.

Another try is your gaming controller, if you use a joystick or something, try to plug it out temporalily and see if it helps.

I was looking for solutions with google and came across something for freespace one. Namely using the windows 95 compatibility mode. I had already tried the 9x/ME mode, since I figured 95 is pretty damn old. I had nothing to do, so I tried 95 compatibility mode... and it seems to be working! I already finished 2 training missions without any crash. Oh yeah, I can finally play again!

But hey, thanks for the effort dude.

That's really strange!

FS2 should work without any problems under W2k and XP.
Really odd...
