FS1 install error for WinXP pro
I keep on getting this eror at the beginning of installation.
"Setup is unable to decompress and copy all the program files needed to proceed with installation. Contact your software vendor

Anybody got a solution? i got FS2 to work and I am not running them under any compatibility modes either.

Could be a setup error in itself, corrupted file maybe? I have the same problem. I cant uninstall my FS.

you are right ns33, it is a set up error. Is there anyway around this? like a file I could download? I heard that some files can be taken and stuff. anybody got any suggestions?

If it's just one file, useless by itself, so it would not give away a commercial product, perhaps we could RAR it and sent it to you. I don't know, however - the file may be immense (File => 10MB), or it might contain a huge part of the game (it wouldn't be right to give the game away).
Your problem, ns33, is a complete mystery to me. I can't see an uninstall program for FS anywhere, so it is probably a corrupted log file. A possible solution to this would be to install Freespace again over the top (with exactly the same settings as before) so it rewrites the log entries and then it can be uninstalled.
As for you, Link, I don't know whether it can be done. We need the advice of our local ethics committee. Here boy!
[EDIT] It might be a futile thing, trying to install Freespace on WinXP Pro. It didn't work on my setup, that's why I tandem boot Win98 SE (for Descent 3 as well) and Linux Mandrake 9.0 (for no games yet, but its time will come!!) [/EDIT]

It does have something to do with my WinXP pro setup actually. Problem is, the file _ISDL and freespaceautorun comes up as a white box with a blue bar which I knwo is not good. It means that WinXP can't read it. Do I need a new installing package? Maybe one for WinXP which might recognise these files. I know that is definately the problem. I'll give it a shot anyway.

I always got the autorun to come up, so maybe it is a problem with your CD. Try copying all the files on the CD to a directory on your hard disk and looking for read errors. If there are any, then your copy of FS is almost certainly damaged. It may be possible to install FS from a directory on the hard disk, but I don't know (I'll try it and also try again to install FS normally - I have installed Service Pack 1 off a magazine cover disk and that may have affected it).
[EDIT] Check that you are installing it with admin priveleges. Also run it at least once with the admin priveleges, to allow it to write its registry entries properly, but you are not at that stage yet [/EDIT]

I just tried installing and running Freespace. It worked from a normal install and also from copying all the files on the CD to a directory on the hard disk. I had to patch it to version 1.06 to make it work and I still needed the CD to run it (it needed the movies), but it worked.
The steps that I took are:
1:- Copy all the files on CD 1 to a directory on your hard disk (I used C:\Temp\FREESPACE_1 - the volume name of the Freespace CD)
2:- Next, I ran freespaceautorun.exe from the HDD. It installed normally
3:- Then I set ZoneAlarm (my firewall. if you don't have it, go to http://www.zonelabs.com to get it. It is free and the best there is - go to http://www.grc.com to see how vulnerable you are) to let Freespace access everything - I brought up the ZoneAlarm window, went to the Program Control tab, then to the Programs sub-tab and used the Add button to find the file called FS.exe (in the Freespace directory). Then I clicked on the Internet sub-column, under the Server column for Freespace and selected Allow.
4:- I put the disk in (holding Shift down to cancel the autorun, which is what you should do) and ran Freespace from the Start menu. Don't forget to use the Setup button in the Freespace launcher to configure everything.
5:- Freespace bombed out and went back to the desktop. This is OK.
6:- Next, I ran fs10x-106uk.exe (you may need to download the US patch, depending on where you got FS from. Patches are available from the http://freespace.volitionwatch.com site, so the archives don't matter). When you run it, make sure that you run the patch app in an empty directory. This will patch FS up to health.
7:- Next, you have to delete the FreeSpace entry from ZoneAlarm, as the file has changed and ZoneAlarm will kick up a stink. To do this, click on the Freespace entry in Zonealarm's Programs window and press the 'Delete' key on your keyboard. Then re-add FS.exe to ZoneAlarm, using the same procedure as in step 3.
8:- Run Freespace. It should work at this point.
When you copy the files, note down any read errors and in what files they come from. Try and copy all the files, as Windows will stop if there is a read error and you will not know if there are any more damaged areas of your disk if Windows stops. Also, the files will not be copied if this happens, and you need them. After you have copied as much as possible, tell me what files are corrupted and I may be able to send them to you.
Looking at it, it would appear that the only files which are corrupted are installation exes, which are quite small in total (only about 400 kB) so I probably will be able to send them to you.
This has to be the longest post that I have ever written!
