How many people think RPGs were better in the old days?

I’ve actually seen it posted that RPGs aren’t what they used to be.. does anyone agree with that?

Sprites all the way!!!

Sprites of the old age are where its at man.... If they can make a Contra side scroller COME ON give us a SPRITE RGP it could be more colorful and cartoony like RaganarokOnline... thats what I like. You could make so many side quest you couldnt do them all... multiple endings and kick ass weapons and armor OH man RPG's of OLD are the KINGS!!!!!!

Well, see, sprites aren't bad, but neither are polys, if done right.

Consider Xenogears uses sprite-based characters in a fully 3D gameworld. It's great. And not because of the sprite characters - I don't care about that. I care about the *game* ... if they'd used poly characters or sprite characters, it's irrelevant. I still like it.

I don't really see how sprites automatically equal more sidequests and "kick ass weapons and armor" either, considering the absurd amount of storage space available on PC and all three current consoles, much less what's in the pipes for the next generation of hardware.

I swear - everybody loves Xenogears! That and Chrono Trigger seem to be really strong arguments for modern RPGs - are you going to play Xenosaga when it comes out?

Chrono Trigger is a modern RPG? It originally came out on the SNES. (As well as Final Fantasy 3, the best FF of them all.)

Yes, that's true... but I guess because Xenogears and Chrono Trigger are so highly praised that those two games make good 'arguments for modern RPGs' - due to the fact that people have plenty of faith in their much-aniticipated follow-ups, which will fall under the category of modern RPG. (hope that made sense)

Chrono Trigger is sprite-based and came out in 1995. That counts as "the old days" to most people. Chrono Cross, on the other hand, is the sequel-of-sorts and in 3D. Although I'm still not sure whether I like CC or not, you can't say "Chrono Trigger was awesome so therefore Chrono Cross is cool too" -- well, you can, but I prefer to judge each game on its individual merit as well as connection to other games (if applicable)

As for Xenosaga, you bet I'll be playing it when I can get my hands on it.

Here's another example: Parasite Eve, really, is only capable of being 3D due to the battle system. I like the battle system, therefore I like PE being in 3D.
On the other hand, I think Tales of Phantasia would be ... weird, at the least, in full 3D. It's much better using the sprite system.

Of course, there's the argument that if you have the capability to do a 3D game you'll make a game tailored for 3D, and if you can only do sprites, you'll make a game tailored for sprites. And that's true. So yeah, like I said, it doesn't matter...gameplay does.

Remmy: Meh. FF4 owns your soul. Kain > You.
Though I have to say I'm a pretty big fan of 6, and the PSX era ones as well...

Awesome games.

Long live Bioware!
