More details would be handy.
Also, this topic belongs to General Discussion.
No problems with FS2 and XP Pro here.

1) Did you upgraded as in installed XP over W98 or did you use clean install, as in formatted your OS partition and then installed XP. Latter is recommended.

2) What error message FS gives you or how it does not work?

3) Does other games work? Try other older DX5 game and a new game as well.

4) Have you updated your motherboard chipset drivers, display adapter drivers and sound card drivers?

5) You hardware specs? Motherboard, display adapter, sound card, amount of memory and type?

6) Goto Start --> Run and type "dxdiag" without quotes. Select each tab and see if there are any problems told under "Notes". You can ignore "...is not digitally signed" as it is usually normal on non-WHQL drivers.

And never underestimate the power of WindowsUpdate.

For all W2k/XP users:
Windows XP Services tweak guide
Windows 2000 Services tweak guide

Services are single most important area you need to tweak, there are many useless services started automatically, taking away precious processor time and memory. Also you most likely need to change some services to start automatically, which improves boot time.

There are also many other great guides in TechSpot Guides and Tweaks section.

There are also many other guides and tweaks all over the net, but TechSpot is the only one I can recommend for "newbies". Those who know better of W2k/XP knows where to look for more guides and other tweaks.

Are you talking about Freespace or Freespace 2? I have had
no problems running Freespace 2 on XP but I couldn't get the
original Freespace to work until I patched it then it worked
fine.

Patch both versions to their latest; e.g. Freespace 1 to 1.06 and Freespace 2 to 1.2.

Moved to general discussion ...

Actually, wouldn't this be better off in the FreeSpace forum?

yeah, it probably would be a better off there...and I had the same problem with FS2 that I did on my old computer (Win95), it would install and run just fine, but it wouldnt recognize that there was a disk in the tray...it would prompt and say "Please insert a Freespace2 disk", but that was fixed with a patch...other than that no probs...

Did you try playing with the compatability settings? Set it for wind98/ME and see if that helps.

But you shouldn't have any problems at all, both work fine on XP for me

If you honestly think 98 is better than XP, I want the name and contact information for your drug dealer.

Dynamo: Probably so, now that you mention it.

FS and FS2 should run under XP in native mode. You shouldn't (and its recommended that you don't) have to fiddle around with the compatibility modes in order to get it to work.

Microsoft should have kept the compatibility modes in XP the way they had them in 2000 SP2 where you had to register a DLL before you could use them. Too many people see them as a panacea to all their XP compatibility ills and then point the finger at XP when they don't work (a frequent occurrence in my experience).
