Unhappy Basic game load question

OK, I'm old and not down with it. I created my profile and have saved progress throughout the game but when I try to load the saved game, it always starts again from the beginning. How do you just pick up where you left off?

You don't, Saving doesn't seem to do anything, you always start at the beginning of the level...

I think I get it...once you finish a particular level, you can then "see" the next level and load it. I think it remembers your progress within that level; however, it's confusing that you can choose to play earlier levels from that screen. Sometimes, I don't remember what the level is called or can't really see the icon very well and end up beginning earlier than I want. Whatever....in this case, I would like freedom FROM choice.

Saving game

I don't know if this will benefit you, but here is what I do when saving between levels.
Press F6 key, this will save your game, excactly where you are at that time, you will also see SAVED displayed on your screen.
If things go badly wrong and you know you are going to die, press F9 key.
You will find you are automatically re-started at the point you pressed F6, instead of re-starting the level.
Hope this helps,
Howie.
