VW Main: Archives Down
Posted by IceFire:
IT seems that the Volition Watch Archives are currently offline. The staff and I have just noticed this problem and are currently attempting to ascertain what happened.
Thanks for your understanding and support. We'll try to get them back up as soon as possible.
Well, it WAS working 3 days ago when I tried to look up some Deralict stuff...

We know why its down now. Not sure what the solution is at the moment. We'll make that public when some kind of internal debate concludes.

I hope that the archives come back up soon. This is by far the best depository of Freespace and Freespace 2 stuff that I have found on the web so far.
Not only that, but it seems that every other FreeSpace site links to the Volition Watch archives instead of hosting files on their own site. So, in effect, when the Volition Watch archives went down so did the archives for the entire FreeSpace community.

It has been some time since the archives were reported as being down...
Is the last freespace mission and mod archives site dead?
I am going to take a wild shot in the dark here, and say the internal debate is whether or not to bring the archive back to life...and i gather that debate is over, or never finished...
If it is over, was the reason because the archives no longer were able to pay for the web space?
If it never finished, is it because you dont know if anyone outside of the staff cares?
I care, else I would not be posting. I think freespace was, and STILL is, the best god-damned space simulation to come out since X-wing...
Miraxis, I couldn't agree with you more on that last comment.

Any update on the status of the archives?

Another thing that peope need to consider with the archives is that a lot of people have spent a lot of time developing the archive contents and have chosen to make their work available to the community at large. It may have even inspired people to have a go at creating new things, simply because there is a demand for them. With the archives down, a lot of sweat is currently wasted.
It would be nice if the Volitionwatch team told the community what the problem was, we could all have a go at proposing solutions. For example, if the cost of running the archives was an issue, what about asking for a small subscription to help with running costs?
Update: the account is being fixed (since it was destroyed when the hard drive failed) ... and I have a backup of all the FS1/FS2 files ... the catch is that all the newer stuff is gone (post Sept 12, 2001) ...
Nice one!
As for repairing the archives, all the contents will have been downloaded by someone somewhere - I have quite a few FS1 and FS2 Campaigns sitting on my hard drive at home (the same as lots of other FS addicts!)
It should be possible to reconstruct the archives from the stuff that everyone else has downloaded.
However, from the fact that all of the new stuff has gone, I gather that all of the ratings for missions and campaigns will also have been lost.
Database is still intact, so no. The ratings are not lost, just the mission files.
Well it's better than nothing.

So...now that the problem has been fixed, how long will it be until the archives get some content in them? Or am I the only one who sees something wrong with the archive index?

Yes Krim, I noticed that problem as well.
Any news, Staff?
Sorry guys ... been really busy at work so naturally I've been bringing it home too. Which means I haven't had much time. I promise I will get the Archives back up this week.
