In the end, it doesn't even matter...

Indeed, what happened to VWA? Telefrag gives me the For'Oh4. Or is it Tellefrag? Tellefragged? Can't remember.

Heh, or can't spell.

Yeah worked while ago nicely, now 404 error...

It seems that they lost AVW on infinite sea of data...

yea, well it appears the Archives were on a hard drive that failed or something like that ... and our gracious *cough*dipsh!t*cough* host doesn't do backups of their affiliate sites ... so basically what I'm saying is that the Archives just fell into a black hole.

Posted by Hunter83 on 11-12-2002 04:50 AM:

Maybe they'll emerge from some white hole in some random server somewhere

*checks ftp*

nope, not there, better look somemore

*checks google*

All the p0rn really clogs this up.

*continues searching google*

*dies from old age, having never made it past the p0rn *

So basically what you're saying is that

FIVE YEARS OF AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY'S WORK IN MODS, MODELS AND MISSIONS IS GONE FOREVER?!

It's the Circle of Life

Things that go into black holes don't usually come back out.

But, hey, we've still got each other.

yes. thanks Telefragged. maybe that's why they call themselves that.

Posted by Black Wolf on 11-12-2002 04:54 PM:

Oh - bother.

The mods are no great problem, as Hunter has backups of most of them from F2S, and the original creators will have the rest - but the missions...damn.

yea ... I guess you could say the work isn't LOST, just the common source of distribution. you can all imagine the problem here.

Hate to say it, but this almost relates to the shutdown of the VBB...

AAAAAAAHHHHHH!

Ok, well, um...

Howabout this:

The Internet Archives site has some of the pages from the Archives up...but just the pages, not the missions themselves.
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://archives.volitionwatch.com

However, this does have an index of missions and such. Go to "All Missions", etc., and a page pops up. So we have a list.

Now I'm sure that many people have downloaded most of the missions at some point or another.

So does someone feel like compiling a list, and asking the community to re-upload the missions that they have? We could try to recreate the archives on another site from what we have.

Sort of reminds me of the story of the POWs in Vietnam who were able to reconstruct nearly the entire Bible from verses they had memorized.

Unless someone downloaded every single mission for both FreeSpace 2 and Descent: FreeSpace just before VWA got Telefragged it'll be impossible to piece it all together again exactly the way it was.

Oh well. I think we can all agree the VWA had a good run.

Posted by Mr. Fury on 11-13-2002 10:13 AM:

I hate when something like this happens.

First you spend a lot of time and trouble to organize whole archives thing.
Then people are slowly starting to use it, and it's gaining popularity.
And then the archives goes beyond the Rim, even if still so young in age.

I am angry.
