Linux version

Would it be feasible to make a Linux version of the mod files (assuming the source isn't being released), now that the source is available, and a port has been made?
This probably isn't a high priority, but after getting such an amazing game running on Linux, I really want to see your MOD in action (it's been a long time since I've even played Freespace). It's just a suggestion, but Linux seems to run 'Freespace 2' more than adaquetely well.

Since the mod is mearly a change of game files etc and not a source code change (at least for R1) there is no reason why it won`t run on linux now (unless the mod is packaged as an self executing zip file)

As far as I know, the Linux version (if its working, when its working) reads data exactly the same. So....aside from maybe our self-executing installers, you guys are good to go.

Actually, that's what I meant. It'd probably work fine, but the self-extracting executable installer doesn't work on 'wine', and produces a crash, but aside from that, it'd probably just need a straightforward repackaging (zip, rar, tar.gz?).

Isn`t there any program on linux that will open a self executing zip? I know that there are programs on the PC that will do it.

A self-extracting executable is a Windows binary. Unless it conforms to the ZIP format as well (which this apparantly doesn't), there's no way to extract the data on it on a non-Windows OS, aside from 'Wine', which apparantly doesn't like the binary either, responding with an ugly crash.
But as far as self-extracting executables go, Windows doesn't fare so well on average, though I have seen the rare self-extracting zip. Though of course, I suppose a self-extracting shell script could do the same thing as well. *shrug*

Can't you extract the files under windows and then transfer them over to the linux hard-drive/partition (or burn them to a CD or something)?

That's assuming that I have more than one partition or hard-drive, or have access to a second computer, which I don't. (Is everyone else REALLY that rich?)

Is it really *that* difficult for it to be put into simple archives with relative paths?

At worst, it's making the mod available to more Freespace 2 users, yes?

Forgive me if I don't understand why it's such a huge deal just to make the mod also available in an archive format readily available to all users.
Most mods have done that anyway from the start (zip), right?
*sigh*

Yes...but we did it using a self extracting EXE/install system to negate the "difficulty" many users would experience installing the MOD.

Repackaging the current EXE's would take quite a bit of time. But doing the new R2 release wouldn't be too much extra effort (except, double the upload time). And remember that one year ago, Source Release was the least we were expecting.

As I understand, the Linux version does not work perfectly yet anyways and its untested in dealing with even simple MOD's. By the time thats working nicely, I bet will have a new release for you.

sorce code alterations dond't like mods, were not entierly sure why,
but there are things like all subsystems haveing a total of more than 100% of the hull strength,
wich is bad,
for some unknown reason
