no support?
"Thanks for the information.
Unfortunately we won't be able to add it to our auto-update functionality.
That would indicate official support, and in order to officially support a
patch, it would have to go through our round of testing and approval.
We just cannot afford the time it takes to do so. I realize how that seems,
but this is unfortunately the way it is.
We do appreciate the
support, and, I personally, am quite impressed with
the work you've done here.

Ok look this kind of irrates me. why. well well is support for 1.2 patch? Lets view ye olde readme to find the "support" the otehr patches brought.
First 1.2
1.20
- Fixed hole in VPP loading that allowed cheaters to run mod-like
changes without actually running a mod.
**Apparently the hole was alot bigger then you thought....
Now onto 1.1:
- Fixed data-mismatch problem when joining a multiplayer server that gave the "Data does not match" error message.
- Fixed instances where a multiplayer server would crash when kicking a player.
- Fixed railgun trajectory visual to no longer deflect off some walls.
- Fixed console closing problem. Only need to hit "~" once now.
- Removed delay in picking up dropped weapons in multiplayer.
**Either those things were never fixed or were re broke. Those are only the ones I have encountered personally. And I dont use RED.
The point im trying to make is saying you can host it due to offering support is a load of crap. Because to offer support you would have had to support the game in the first place. Look at 1.2 if you can hostly say that patch passed significant testing and you never found one of the 200 or so bugs/glitches and thought they werent significant tells me something. Oh people being teh wrong color. Shooting 6 or 7 rails at a time. Nah those arent bad. Oh yeah that hole in VPP fixing...er thanx fer fixing that 1? We'd all be better off going back to 1.1 just so we can at least have teh things that were fixed in 1.1 still fixed(though i think some were still broke in 1.1[like server crashing])
Anyways ill prolyl be banned or something but you know whut it had to be said. Support isnt breaking a game further. The 2nd least you could do is host the damned thing and have a popup saying **There is no support for this patch question go to rfhq.com and post in the forums** or something like that. V/THQ has left many huge chips on my back because frankly. I get bored and find it amusing to see some of the stuff that doesnt work that makes it into final games esp the consoles. Im not blaming V as much as I do THQ. But saying you support your product is a joke.
quote:nope.
Anyways ill prolyl be banned or something

To me, thats a perfectly valid view. Never mind the fact that what you've created breaks all kinds of licence agreements but if Volition were to throw their support behind it without testing it it opens them up to all kinds of legal crap they they would rather not have. Of course, thats lost in your never ending quest to find new ways of saying you hate Volition

I believe they all try to do their best. But how feasible is it to continue supporting something at the expense of development?
I wish all games were perfect AND free. It just doesn't work that way in the real world. I've spent hundreds of dollars on computer games over the past (number edited) years. I can count on one hand the number I continue to enjoy. Red Faction is at the top of the list but to be perfectly honest, I'd rather see a pc version of RF2 then another patch for RF1.

Yes they should have supported RF, and their reputation suffered from that. Im sure they are aware of that.
But you have to understand that if they hosted this patch, and something went wrong, it would be their responsibility. They would have to really test it. Not test it like the 1.20 patch, but really examine it. They cant just trust anyone. In fact it might be easier for them to just make the patch themselves.
It would be great if they hosted it, but I can understand that they dont want to. We cant seriously _expect_ them to do this.
They should have supported RF, but the fact that they actually sent a responce like this shows that they have learned from their mistakes.
As I see it, they could have simply ignored they mail we sent, but instead we got a decent answer back. Appreciated.

`hmmmm
I completly understand the liabitliy issue. I wouldnt want to host a untested product in no way. You have to understand the amercican consumer, if something went wrong, then that could in actuality spell the end of volition. Its just good business practice.
But after the failure to support rf etc.etc.etc. V should have taken this oppurtunity to show that they do support thieir product. The rf community is slowly being a known entity and they could have gained alot of trust... trust you cant buy... by simply showing more interest then nothing at all.
and by the way, yes, officially there is no patch. and I would suggest to the makers of the patch to remain anonamous for any liabity or non liscence factors that may come up in the future.
If V keeps up with the company image that they have formed I wouldnt be surprised if something came up.

WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?
Theres no liability for the patch makers, its just a "No-cheat Mod" that works.
K heres the thing people. Volition actually replied to the email. Not once but more than than a few times. Im very grateful to them replying. At least we(well me and a few others) know they listen. They are making RF2. I say let them carry on with that. They have learnt there mistake with Rf. So we wait for RF2. Im pretty sure that will go down with the knowing situation of RF. At least they havent turned around and told us to cancel all development on the "community patch". So thats means less worrying for us on using it and more development. I say a big thanks to volition for responding to the emails.
THANKS!!!!.
Anyway on with the patching and less of the cheating

I just had to point out how little the 1.2 patch actualyl must have been tested. Basically heres how IMHO 1.2 was tested.
Does it install?
Yes
Patch complete release it.
Because if they can honestly say they tested it and didnt find one of the literally hundreds of bugs esp. the bugs they fixed in 1.1 but re broke.
It'd just be nice because the only server on 1.3 that i notice are Euro servers and well I cant play on Euro servers on 56k its just a lagfest
Plus where are all the players that arent part of the community going to go when theres 10 1.2 servers left and they will be left clueless. Even if you just posted a lil text message to help get the word out.
I wonder if they would be willing to post a measage mentioning the exsistance of this, or if that would be concidered a form of endorsement too, just saying "someone has made a 'suposed fix', we here at V have looked it over and it seems to work and seems safe but we can't garentee anything, for more information, look here" or some such, only they'd probly spell some of that corectly
