Would it be possible to redesign the game so that different ships have different impact explosions when hit by the same weapon?

You could for example have a vessel built with a beam-reflective hull (such as the Excalibur from B5).

Or am I just trying to make life too complicated?

It would be difficult, but not impossible. When I created my Alpha Quadrant Project last year, I would have loved to have had a green explosion effect for the Borg Cube (like in ST:FC).
