Updating to the latest FS2 version (1.02) solved any XP Pro compatibility problems I had.
Same with upgrading FS1 to 1.06.
Have you tried that yet? If not that, compatibility modes?

It's possible to download the patch without using the update option. I think you can get it at freespace2.com but don`t quote me on that.
The patch is out there though

open windows explorer, look for the install program for FS2, right-click on it, change the compatibility mode to windows 98/ME.
then change your screen res to like 1024x768@16 bit and see if it will install. IF NOT, uhh... try starting up in safe mode and installing.
the last resort, copying the install files to your hard-drive and trying to install, but i dont know if THAT will work at all.
im on XP pro, i was able to install perfectly, but couldnt play (video issue)
before doing any of that stuff, check out windows update, get all your service packs and compatibility updates.

I'm sorry to open this old thread again, but I have a problem with Freespace 1 and XP Pro.
Installs fine, when i run, i get the launch thingie. And everything's fine untill i either hit the joystick tab or untill i hit the detect system in the performance tab. Then it crashes.
I tried updating, but it won't work. Says something about a wrong file and a file with the same name found.
Any help would be appreciated. I've already tried compatibility mode. It doesn't work. I have the normal US version of freespace.
My system is a 1,5 pentium 4 processor
256 mb ram (RIMM)
40 GB HD
Geforce 2 GTS/Pro
ac'97 onboard sound card.
My joystick's a sidewinder 3d pro.
Oh, and if I just try to run the without setup or with limited setup, the launcher closes and nothin' happens.

Try getting the patch yourself rather than letting FS2 try to update itself.

I'm not talikng about Freespace 2, but Freespace 1, so that link is of no use to me. And I tried installing the patch for FS1 manually already. Same problem.
