Size and Capital Ships: Does it matter?
Given my (unusual) interest in Freespace capital ships, I'd just like to know what the community thinks on the subject of that all-important factor: Size.
Was the aptly named Colossus a disaster or a good idea? Is bigger better or worse?
Generally, in the trade off between armour, speed and armament, when you increase one you have to change another. How far should the designers (And the talented MODers of this community) of the GTVA go?
Personally, I shudder at the thought of a ‘super-capital ship’, a 10 km battleship which could have the words ‘Bomb me, please ’ painted on its ridiculously massive hull.
Any thoughts?

Hmmm thats a good thought. I think that once you start to build Giant Super Cruisers then they start to become Giant targets. Also They take many many years to construct when adventually they will just be destroyed in a battle. The Colossus was a failure as everyone should know, They should not have built it so long because well it was just to long. If they were to rebuild the colossus they would have to build it alot more bulkier and alot more powerful. (kinda like the Sathanas) Thats what my thoughts are on this
Maybe we should state here and now that no one is allowed to say whether or not they thought the colossus was a good ship/waste of time to stop that discussion flaring up again!
As for big ships in general I'd say it depends on the support they recieve and the amount of fighters they carry and deploy. The sath and colossus both had a lack of anti fighter weapons (mainly for gameplay reasons I think). Arm one against small ships like the deimos and we'll see how long bombers last.

Colossus was a great concept and a great design...but it wasn't built to fight against ships of its own size. When they sat down and built the ship, it was designed to counter super destroyers like the Lucifer. Alternatively, it was designed to take on entire battlegroups....and win. So it was a good idea....it just came along at the wrong time.

If you disabled its turrets....gave it no fighter defense....and you had about an hour on your hands then yes

When I saw first time the Colossus I knew it would be failure and it would be destroyed in end of story.
I think it would be already time to GTVA learn that: Shivans will always be superior race for them, Shivans have always more bigger ships and gun... And last of it they have 'em more than GTVA, Finaly Shivans will always come back.

I once thought that it would be kewl to make a small mission where there were 5 deimos with the most powerful terran guns on the front. ANyways these deimos would go against the colossus and it was totally one sided the deimos kicked the colossus @$$. I personally thought that was kinda stupid. I mean in fs2 why didnt bosch just put the bust guns on the front of 5 deimos and take out every enemy ship it came in contact with!!! kinda stupid if you ask me.

Colossus was a good psychological weapon though - the nTf kamikazed the Repulse without effect - they were too scary of it to even try fighting. The Colossus just wasn't built to handle Shivan ships designed with equal beams, all focused on one angle. But it could probably fairly easily annihilate anything smaller than a Sathanas if it broadsided it.
