-- Could [V] make a new space sim? (http://volitionwatch.papageorgefamily/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=6575)

Arrow Could [V] make a new space sim?

It wouldn't have to be an FS continuation. It wouldn't be the FreeSpace that we've all grown to love, but it wouldn't matter.
We may look at it and say "oh, an attempt to better the best" but that's what many people, myself included, thought about FS1 while the X-Wing series was big.

It could be called... "DictatorSpace" or something. Just to gyp Interplay.

What about "LibertyGalaxy"?

After all, "Freespace" is sounding somehow like a hard drive cleanup tool...

Could they? Yes.
Would they want to? Yes.

Are they going to? No.

See, there's this thing known as not selling copies ... it translates to no profit. And that, for a business, is bad.

Although that situation of not selling copies could change in a few years. RPG's came back...so can space sims.

True, IceFire, o ye of diplomatic reason.

For the moment, however, they're not so hot.

why couldnt the (behind closed dors) give a shot to a game like IG3 or darkspace chek them out to see what i mean darkspace has like 40k plus online players that pay 10 bucks a month (im not one of them cause my cred card stinks) and IG3 is just gonna blow everyone away with its graphics and story so why dont they give it a shot and not tell anyone about it untill they think its good enough to tell ppl.....

The space sim market - bar Star Wars and the odd online game - is dead. I doub tTHQ would take the risk unless there was signs of a big revival. with only Freelancer of note on the way for the Pc, I doubt we'll see any V space sims for a fair while, if ever.

I'd like to be proven horribly wrong, however.........

has volition made an RTS game yet? i think that's the only genre they haven't covered, and i wonder what they could offer in an RTS.

If you think that RTS, FPS, RPG and CSS (combat Space Sim) are the only four genres out there, you need to play some more games. I can name about 10 more genres right now if you wanted me to.

However, bah to Volition making an RTS. Lately it seems if you've played one RTS, you've played them all. I would like to see a driving game from Volition, preferably something along the lines of Gran Turismo or NFS: High Stakes. Or maybe something along the lines of a Zelda 64 type game (what genre do you place that in?)

Posted by Brando on 06-24-2002 04:40 AM:

zelda: rpg.

i play plenty of games, but im thinkin a game along the lines of total annihilation (oh, i loved it). i could sound like an idiot and say " can [V} maek a game liek TEH NEVATWINTAR KNITES?!?". but a strategy game, nonetheless ... wait... forget it, they're all pretty much the same. ill leave the game making and the genre of the games they make to [V]. what the f!&*@ was i thinking...

What are you, some kind of average PC gamer?

Posted by Dynamo on 06-24-2002 09:00 PM:

I don't know. Whenever I think RPG, I immediately think HP, hit points, weapon and spell combos, turn-based fighting, yadda yadda.

Zelda 64 seems more like an action game with some RPG elements in it, but I don't know if there really is a genre to it.

Just my $0.02.

Zelda=Adventure game, just like LucasArts' Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and Indiana Jones. Not to be confused with RPGs or Platformers (jumping games.)

As far as Volition making another space sim: Suppose they made one that wasn't related to Freespace but used an enhanced version of the FS2 engine. That would mean we already know how to mod it... and Interplay might not own the rights to the new series. Hmm...

Meh, considering how far technology has advanced since the FS engine was developed, it would make more sense to build an entirely new engine from the ground up.

By who? Zelda has always been classified as an adventure game, from what I've seen. Hell, my old Nintendo Power calls Zelda 2 adventure.

I think only Shigeru Miyamoto knows the correct genre for Zelda. In my opinion, it's story-driven adventure game with searching and action elements in it.
